I consider unpacking and putting all my stuff away.

But then I figure it can wait.

There’s no rush. I can work on putting everything away at my leisure. I mean, it’s not like I have a busy social schedule.

“That’s sad,” I mutter.

But it is what it is.

Blowing out a breath, I decide to quit feeling sorry for myself and just get up and go out onto the deck for a while.

I could use the fresh air.

Once I’m outside, I take a deep breath.

Autumn is definitely in the air.

Though it’s still comfortable for the moment, if I plan to chill out here for a while, I may need to dig a hoodie out of one of those boxes.

But not now.

Sighing, I close the sliding glass door, which clicks into place, and then I plop down on one of the comfy cushioned deck chairs.

The view really is nice.

Beyond the small backyard is a tract of land that’s heavily forested. The trees are still mostly green, but there’s a hint of yellow in some of the leaves.

I also love how quiet it is.

It’s peaceful to listen to nothing but the birds singing their lyrical songs as the day comes to a close.

I’m so relaxed that I actually doze off for a bit.

When I wake, the sun is sinking into the horizon, leaving the sky painted in streaks of orange and purple.

It’s beautiful, but there is one problem—it’s much chillier now than when the sun was high in the sky.

Since I’d like to stay out on the deck a while longer, it’s probably time to go in and grab that hoodie.

Rubbing my hands up and down my arms to warm up, I stand and step over to the sliding glass door.

But, shit, I can’t open it.

The damn thing is freaking locked.

I wiggle and push and pull but to no avail.

The door is not budging.

Great, I’m stuck outside.

“That must’ve been the click I heard,” I grumble. “I thought the door was just closing, not locking. Shit.”

What am I going to do now?

Walking around the perimeter of the deck, I peer over the edges and quickly determine it’s way too high for me to jump.

Yeah, a broken leg is the last thing I need.
