I tap my foot. “I was born ready, honey.”

“You’re so weird,” she says as she rolls her eyes at me again. But then, this time loud and clear, she calls out, “8-4-7-9-6.”

I nod. “Got it.”

Repeating the numbers in my head, I start on my way over to the monster Addison’s lair, where I hope she doesn’t slay me.

Addison

While I wait out on my deck, shivering by this point, I think about how I actually am grateful Hayden is coming to save my ass.

And what a cold ass it is at the moment.

I should probably be a little nicer to the man, but bantering with him is far too much fun.

I just can’t help myself sometimes.

Oh, well, he seems to enjoy it too.

And he certainly has some good comebacks.

I have to respect him for that, though I don’t want to.

I mean, I’m supposed to hate the guy, right?

Maybe “hate” is too strong of a word.

I don’t know.

I think the cold is getting to me, freezing my brain or something.

Sighing, I plop down and curl up on the deck chair with the plushy cushions, tucking my legs under my body in an effort to warm up.

Hayden is actually pretty quick in getting over to my house.

Still, when he opens the sliding glass door and steps out onto the deck, I can’t resist staring up at him and saying, “Finally.”

I swear there’s a smile tugging at his full lips as he volleys back, “You’re welcome, sweetheart.”

Standing and rolling my eyes, I tell him, “Quit referring to me with terms of endearment. We don’t even like each other, you know?”

For this one long beat, our eyes meet.

Damn, his blues are pretty, even in the moonlight.

Wait, what am I thinking?

But I can’t stop.

He holds my gaze, and I bite my lip.

For a second or two, there’s this connection. One where there’s no hate or dislike, but definitely attraction.

It’s nice.

I like it.

He breaks the moment, though, when he holds out a hoodie.
