At the front door, I start to unzip his hoodie.

“Oh, here,” I say. “I’m sure you want this back.”

“No, that’s okay.” He holds up his hand. “Just keep it for now. You can give it back to me whenever.”

It is kind of comfy and warm, so I nod. “All right. Thanks.”

“No problem.”

He turns and places his hand on the doorknob, preparing to leave, but I stop him. “Hey, Hayden.”

He turns back to me. “Yeah?”

As sincerely as I can, I tell him, “Thank you. You know, for saving me tonight. I don’t know what I would have done. I guess break the glass or freeze for real. Either option wouldn’t have been a good one, though. So, yeah, thank you.”

In a tone devoid of any sarcasm or venom, he replies, “You’re welcome, Addison.”

And then he’s gone.

Before I go up to bed, I lean back against the closed front door and think about a nice way I can repay him.

Maybe tomorrow morning, before I go to work, I’ll take over some of my grandma’s secret recipe beef stew.

Yeah, that would be perfect.

Smiling, and for the first time feeling kind of okay about Hayden Harrington, I head up to bed.

Hayden

The next morning, just as I’m about to leave the house for practice, the doorbell rings.

Imagine my surprise when I open the door to find Addison on my front steps.

Her tote is slung over one shoulder, and in the other hand, she’s holding a plastic container filled with something that looks like soup.

“Hi,” she says with a smile.

“Hey.” I nod, barely noticing that she’s now holding the plastic container out to me.

Yeah, I’m far too distracted by how absolutely pretty she looks this morning. Her long raven hair is a mass of soft curls tumbling over one shoulder, and her eyes look especially green in the bright daylight.

Maybe it’s also because she has on a fuzzy kelly green sweater. It really brings out the color of her eyes. It’s just the right amount of snug too. And the black pencil skirt she’s wearing further accentuates her sexy curves.

I’m not even normally a shoe guy, but her black patent leather pumps with little green bows that match her sweater just add to her overall allure.

Damn, this woman is hot.

Too bad we don’t get along.

Though last night wasn’t too bad, particularly not at the end. It was like we reached an unspoken truce of some sort.

“Hayden, are you okay?” she asks, tilting her head and peering at me curiously.

I chuckle and reply, “Yes, I’m fine. I’m just surprised to see you on my doorstep, that’s all.”

Um, even though it’s the truth, maybe it’s not the best thing to say.

Pulling back the container sharply, she mutters, “This was a bad idea.”
