“What did you audition for? What role demands we stay married?”

“It’s not a demand. But it wouldn’t hurt. Fewer headlines,” I explain.

“Ames.” He pinches the bridge of his nose, and I close the distance between us.

“Please, Garrett? This is a chance to play Catherine Parr.”

He shakes his head. “Who?”

“Don’t you remember that show I dragged you to before? The one about all of Henry VIII’s wives?”

“Vaguely.”

“She was Henry’s last wife. The one who ended up being his widow.”

“They’re making a movie about that?”

I can’t help but laugh at the incredulous look on his face. “Not that. The guy she married afterwards—Thomas Seymour—they had a relationship before.”

“Huh.” It’s all he says as he digests my explanation. “Who’s supposed to play Thomas?”

I shrug. “Apparently Fucker auditioned.”

“He better not come near you.” The jealousy in his voice sends a thrill down my spine.

Jealousy? You’re hearing things, Mi. He’s a good friend, and what sounds like jealousy is only his protective nature.

“I don’t want him.” Why do I sound like I ran up a flight of stairs to talk to him?

“But you want the part?” he asks.

I nod. “This is my chance.”

“Your chance for what?”

“To do what I’ve always wanted.”

“I thought you were.” His confusion is adorable and understandable, even if I wish he understood without my having to spell it out.

God, why doesn’t he get it?

“Garrett, for almost ten years I’ve played the ditzy friend, the cheerleader, the girl that the guy cheats with, the femme fatale.” I tick off each part on my fingers.

“I’m aware.”

“I don’t want to be only that anymore. This? This is my chance.”

“Why is this so important? This role?” he asks, studying me intently.

The way his gaze travels straight through me should make me nervous, but it doesn’t. He’s always been there for me. And I know now won’t be any different.

“It just is. That’s all.”

He scoffs. “Yeah, try telling that to someone who hasn’t known you as long as I have. Now tell me the real reason.”

“I don’t want to be cast for my looks anymore.”

“Uh-huh.” He motions for me to keep going.
