The smartest decision now is to retreat and regroup.

“I should finish getting ready,” I say weakly.

Reaching out, he traces one finger down my cheek.

“To be continued, then.”

Chapter Seven

GARRETT

Up until recently, attending a party like this would have put me in a blind panic. Crowds and I don’t mix. Parties are not energizing for me. But once we started growing Arabesque into a production company versus a casting company, I went from Meric’s assistant to Operations Manager.

Soon to be Head of Arabesque US.

My job—and my upcoming one—doesn’t allow me to fade into the shadows. But it’s like I revert into the awkwardly shy teenager as soon as we leave the safety of the car.

“Mia! Mia! Over here!” Lights flash in time with the shouts for Mia to turn one direction or another, her arm coming up to wrap me next to her.

“Smile,” she murmurs.

“Easier said than done,” I reply.

“Don’t think about them.” Her hand is warm on my waist. “Remember when we went to prom and how the moms nearly blinded us with the flashes on the camera?”

I snort, some of the tension easing from my shoulders.

“Yep.”

She giggles. “These are just more eager versions of that.”

“Something tells me these photos are going to be on more than just the mantle.”

She laughs. “No, probably not. They’ll be gone tomorrow. C’mon.”

She tugs me up the steps and into the front door, leaving the chaos of flashing lights behind us.

“Mia!”

A woman calls out, lifting her hand in a wave while the man at her side glances at her before turning his attention to us. I tighten my fingers around Mia’s, and she squeezes back once in reassurance before the other couple joins us.

“Fiona, hi. Thank you for inviting us.”

Fiona nods. “Of course. As I mentioned on the phone, I thought this would be a great way for those involved in the production to get to know you and your recently acquired husband. This is Garrett, I presume?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Yes, this is Garrett. Garrett, this is Fiona Mills.”

Taking my cue from her, I smile and reach out to shake hands. “Fiona, nice to meet you in person.”

“You as well.” She studies me like she knows that my marriage to Mia is one big acting job. Just when I’m ready to confess, her attention shifts. “Mia, were you able to meet Cole during your audition?”

“Briefly. Cole, nice to see you again.”

“Mia, welcome.” He turns to me. “Cole Sutton, director.”

“Garrett Harrison, husband.”

“Fiona told me you two recently got married.”
