“No, we didn’t,” Emery snapped.

“—and Molly Ringwald and Richard Nixon were cheating—”

“What the fuck is going on?” Jem whispered to Tean.

Tean shook his head.

“Enough!” Emery shouted. “No more comments!”

Shaw shrank down, eyes wide, but Tean thought he detected a hint of a smile.

“We spent most of the day on the Rangel brothers,” John-Henry said. “We followed them to a place called the Cottonmouth Club, which looks, pardon the language, like a real shit hole. Later, they were prowling around the cat sanctuary, and they went after Jem and Tean. I think our focus needs to be on them.”

Jem shook his head. “I don’t think that’s the best approach.”

John-Henry’s attention on Jem was a little too keen for Tean’s liking. “Why not?”

“What about the other people at the conference? Kristin was acting strangely, right, Tean?”

“She and Rod got into some kind of disagreement,” Tean said slowly.

“She was trying to get into a restricted area of the welcome center. She does veterinary anesthesia. Maybe she was looking for supplies she hadn’t brought with her.”

Tean opened his mouth and shut it again.

Shaw raised his hand.

“No,” Emery barked.

“One thing,” Shaw whispered.

“No.”

“One little thing.”

“No.”

“Your mouth is saying no,” Shaw said, “but your eyes are saying yes, so I’m going to say it anyway.”

“That’s his fucking idea of consent, by the way,” North said. “Try telling him you’ve got a headache when he’s drilling his boner into your leg.”

“We spent all day trying to figure out if Yesenia was alive. She doesn’t have any new charges on her credit card—”

“How do you know that?” Emery asked.

“Because her password is password one two three four five,” North said.

“And nobody at the conference has seen her. The resort staff hasn’t seen her. None of the plastic Santas have seen her, even after exhaustive psychic probing.”

“Ignore that,” North said. “Nobody engage with that.”

“But,” Shaw said, “we did see somebody break into her car.”

“You already told us that,” Emery said. “For the love of Christ, if you waste my time again—”

“We told you somebody had tried to break into her car,” North said. “Clean the shit out of your ears. Tonight, we saw somebody try to break in. Well, she did break in, so I guess it wasn’t really trying.”

“You saw her?” John-Henry asked.
