“Mom told me to take her for a walk because you couldn't, cause you had to study or something.” He lifts his gaze from his phone, and I see the smirk forming as he takes in my sorry state.

There's no point in him asking anymore. He already knows what happened.

“Take her home and make sure you lock the gate properly,” I gently stroke her head and give her one last hug before getting up.

“Okay. But what about you?”

“I'll manage. Now go!” I pull my hood tighter over my head and walk away, glancing back at my dog as she pulls Uri back, refusing to separate from me.

My brother puts his phone in his pocket and grabs the leash, which rested on his arm all this time, while his other hand holds onto the umbrella.

I get to a kid’s park and seek shelter from the rain in a plastic tunnel. I search for a song on my phone and plug in my earphones.

Project Vela - Everything you Hate

I listen to it until the end, and then I start feeling cold. My clothes are wet, and I don't know if I can last here until morning. Hunger gnaws at my stomach because I hadn't eaten anything tonight, except for a small salad and a small piece of meat. Nothing settles well in my stomach when I'm near Anabella.

I sigh and begin scrolling through my contacts.

Rebecca.

Will she pick up after I made her cry yesterday? I don't think so. I lock my phone and place my hands on my chest, gazing at the raindrops colliding with the gigantic plastic tube.

What do I have to lose if I try?

Come to the little park that’s near Kindergarten No. 2. I have something important to talk to you about.

I pressSendand sigh.

She has to come. must have piqued her interest. I even used the word “important”.

Twenty minutes pass. I know this because all I've done is stare at the clock every minute. My battery is running low, and I don’t want to listen to anything else. I just listen to the rain, which, despite all of my wishes, stops as well.

I slowly let myself slide down the slide in the plastic tunnel. When I reach the bottom, I land right in a puddle at the end of the slide.

Fuck! This is all I needed, wet underwear.

I feel like crying again and cover my face with my arm, cursing my days.

“You’re still alive?” I feel something hit my tennis shoe, equally muddied by the rain.

When I move my arm aside, I see Rebecca with an umbrella in her hand, dressed in the same linen jumpsuit she wore today in the backyard. I don't know if it's due to my tired eyes from crying, but her face under the warm glow of the overhead neon light makes her an angel who has come to save me.

Rebecca is my guardian angel.

She has a sweet face, even when she's angry with me, and eyes like the sea during a summer vacation. Her slender legs are covered in high, knee-length black leggings, and over the cream jumpsuit, she wears an oversized gray hoodie. The pants of the jumpsuit are wide, and I wonder if she's cold or if she knows I have a weakness in this jumpsuit.

She probably figured out why my face is swollen, but she doesn't ask about it. That's what I like about her, she never asks me things I can’t talk about. She knows when it's not the right time and stays silent.
