“Now,” she said, a smile lighting up her whole face. “You’re soaked, too!”

It took me a second to grasp her sass, but she thought she could play with the devil and not get burned?

Smiling calmly, I flipped my hair back, ready to play another round. But, my Little Shadow did something I never expected.

She laughed.

Her entire face crinkled with pure joy, her body pretzeled into a full belly roll. She even had to catch herself on the tree to keep from falling onto the sandy ground.

I was speechless.

My brain was not able to function as the melodic song of her enjoyment laced around me like a glove. I thought she was beautiful when she killed, raged, and slept. This reaction, though…was otherworldly. It was an out-of-body experience, and I was captivated.

She was laughing because of me and at me.

I shouldn’t be happy about this. I shouldn’t be fighting a smile because of her joy. But here I was in awe, yet again, at this mesmerizing creature.

“What is your name?” I said, and the musical sound of her joy stopped. She stared at me with curious eyes.

“Jen,” she said quickly. Too quickly. That was a lie.

I walked over to her. My arm was caging her but not touching her as she backed into a tree. She was using it like some sort of shield.

“Your real name is Maya Kayten,” I pressed.

The tree created darkness for my Little Shadow, but the moonlight was shining on me. She studied me. Her eyes traced every line and scar. I was not going to take off my shirt. I didn’t need her to see my past. But she could take her fill of the rest of me.

I gave her my best half-smile. “Like what you see?”

She rolled her eyes.

Brät.

“Fine,” she said with a wistful sigh. “I’m Ember.”

The spark that created an inferno—how accurate that was.

“Ember,” I repeated, her name feeling nice on my lips.

She was so beautiful. Her wet blonde hair made her look like a mermaid. Her beautiful locks covered her breasts and ivory skin, which held the slightest pink blush to it. And god, those red lips with a Cupid’s bow and her captivating blue-gray eyes…

She was beautiful.

She was mine.

I should kill her—right now and end this charade. It would get Markus, my father, and all the drug heads off my damn back.

Behead the princess and bring her crown to my city. Take back my castle, but…

“Why are you looking at me like that, Lucius?” she said, more innocent and shy than I’d ever heard her speak.

I blinked.

The thought of her blood on my hands—no. I couldn’t. I won’t.

“Because,” I said, bracing myself for anything. “You’re mine.”

I dove at her, locking her against my body and spinning so she lay on top of me as I plunged us into the deep moonlit waters.
