My heartbeat was beating in my chest, my world moving in slow motion. Lucius was too focused on not hurting me and wasn’t paying attention to the armed woman on the balcony. I grabbed my dagger from my boot, watching in disbelief as it flew through the air into the heart of the woman.

Her blue-grey eyes stared down at the knife, the blood trickling down the front of her body as her gaze settled on mine. Confusion, pain, and betrayal were written in those beautiful eyes as the gun fell to the ground. The woman dropped from the balcony, taking my last shred of humanity with her soul.

Iheld the phone to my ear, the voices fading away as they said the words, I’d been waiting to hear for nearly a month were spoken. “They found Cassie.”

It was like a dream—my body was floating and not hearing another damn word, and my happiness was the only thing keeping me grounded enough to focus. I knew Quinn was trying to talk to me, but I was on autopilot. My mind’s only thought was me getting to my sister.

We rode in a plane. The hours ticked by fast, too fast. Nothing was going to stop me from seeing her and holding her. I was never letting her go again.

We arrived at a big ass hotel.

Not sure why she’d be here. But hey, I wasn’t complaining. Going off the grid was fine. I would allow anything now that I knew she was here.

Chief Doger himself, the fucking snake, was here. Strange, but I appreciated the welcome wagon.

Cassie deserved it.

I loved her so much. She deserved everything.

I kept thinking about what TV shows I could finally binge that she’d bugged me for years about, all the weird foods she wanted to try from different places in the world, and how she begged me to paint my nails. She always said she wanted to make me look like a girl for once.

I smiled, looking at my nails and imagining what god-awful color she was going to put on me.

Whatever. If it was bubblegum pink, I’d rock it for her. For Cassie. My sister.

Quinn wrapped his arms around me. The big man always gave bear hugs. He was such a nice guy.

“Ella,” he said, his voice cold, hesitant.

That was strange. Why would he be all moody now?

I was about to see my sister.

“Your sister is in there,” Chief Doger said. Not a care in the world for that guy, but I didn’t give a shit. Cassie was here.

Slipping free of Quinn’s arms, I ignored him, running for the door. My sister’s embrace waited for me on the other side.

“Cassie! I’m here—”

My heart stilled.

Stopping dead in my tracks, I looked around. There were people dressed in white scrub outfits, a yellow band slashing across the door frame. The air chilled around me, and a clear tarp on the ground covered a river of crimson underneath it.

Did Cassie kill someone? That wasn’t like her, but maybe it was necessary. She always was a fighter. I was proud of her. Walking forward, I spotted Ally with usual morgue get-up on, and her face saddened for the dead person my sister was forced to kill.

“Ella,” she said, her eyes swollen in red-rimmed tears.

“I’m so sorry.” I shrugged. “Honestly, I hope it doesn’t hurt her too badly, but a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do, right? She’s not in trouble, is she? It was clearly self-defense.” A knife was placed on a steel cart, red blood coating the crime scene bag it was placed in. Was Cassie going to be in legal trouble? Ah, hell, I would get her the best lawyer.

Quinn caught up to me, he and Ally exchanging a look.

“Guys, it’s okay! Cassie had to do it. It wasn’t her fault.”

Quinn swallowed and lightly squeezed my shoulder. It was cute that they loved me and were worried so much about my sister, a murderer. But I would help her get out of this legal shit.

“Ella,” Quinn said, grabbing my shoulders gently but firmly.

I furrowed my brows.
