“Ya know,” I shrugged. “Just the king’s very own knight, baby.”

Now, my queen audibly squealed. The sound was deafening and surprised me, considering she was no taller than my pec muscles. She bounced on her toes. Spinning around and continuing that awful “Eeee” noise.

I caught myself smiling. Unable to figure out the puzzle that was my Little Shadow.

* * *

My Shadow’s eyes looked inquisitive as she stared at her prisoner. Not at all the way I’ve seen her with the drug dealers—my father’s men.

“He’s one of them,” I told her, my gentle squeeze on her arm, assuring her I wasn’t leaving.

“I don’t know. He’s too pretty to be dirty,” she teased.

My jaw ticked, and she laughed, the man looking in her direction but not able to see her beauty.

Ha, mother fucker, I thought as I gazed at her beauty. The guy tilted his head, trying to hear or see her maybe. I threw a punch to his ear, smashing him to the ground. The chair went flying down with him. With a grunt, he blinked up at me. His dizzying gaze snapped to my girl’s before closing. Ember looked at me with annoyance.

“Great job, Meathead,” she chastised. Her hands on her hips.

“Now, he’s unconscious, and we can’t get any information out of him.”

I shrugged. “He shouldn’t have looked at what’s mine.”

Rolling her eyes, she looked down at the guy, my fire of jealousy licking up my neck like venom.

“Maybe we could keep him. He’s cute.”

That was it.

Smacking her ass hard, I threw her over my shoulder, walking to the bedroom to show her, for the next several hours, why she would never stare at another man again.

“I fucking own you, Lév,” I said, tossing her down on the mattress and flipping her over. “Mind, soul, and body,” I continued, ripping her pretty dress with my bare hands.

She gasped. The sting I laid on her ass was hard and sure.

“And for daring to look at another, man,” I warned, cooling the burn with my tongue. “I’m going to make you scream my name. Only mine. Over and over and over.”

Iwoke up.

My head throbbed with a pulsing that felt like ice was embedded into my head. It had been this way for a while now, and the puffy eyes and swollen face were a constant these days. Yawning, the sleeping pills were making me laggy. I swung my feet out of my bed and blindly stumbled in the dark to my bathroom.

Trying to watch my step so I didn’t step on Shadow or Mitzi, I walked the line about ten shuffles from the bed. But when I got there, instead of walking into my baby powder blue bathroom, I smashed straight into a wall. The thud knocked me on my ass.

I rubbed my head, staring in the dark at the solid block of plaster.

What the hell?

Getting into a crawl, I put my hands on the wall and followed it down the line. My confusion was building while my fingertips slid over the cool texture. Stopping abruptly at what felt like a wooden door, my panic rose.

I was not in my apartment.

Staying on the floor, I opened the door and pushed it open. Letting my eyes adjust to the moonlit space. There was a baby grand piano in the dark corner. There were blacked-out windows where I could only stare back at my reflection. There was even a bar with popcorn kernels in two separate bowls and some chocolate syrup next to some handcuffs.

What the fuck? Was I dreaming?

How had I landed myself in some funhouse mirror of kinky rich people?

Shaking my head, I walked along the tile, the cool texture leaving more goosebumps on my skin. I tried to make my footfalls silent, afraid of whoever may be here. After searching some of the closets and a big bathroom, I arrived at a staircase. The floor below me looked ominous and really dark.
