Not thinking about who might see me, I ran to the back and smashed the doors open.

Lucius was sitting on the metal bench, his orange jumpsuit and metal handcuffs gleaming in the sunlight.

His eyes moved toward me, and without a shred of emotion, he looked back to his feet.

What the fuck? Why was he mad at me?

Okay, so sleepwalking into the street was something I’d done, and I left him alone apparently to be arrested, but that wasn’t my fault. Going to him and fussing with the pin to unlatch the cuffs, I stared into his eyes.

Emotionless.

Cold.

“Lucius!” I shook him, trying to get any amount of emotion.

He glared at me. The slight movement to his eyes, his rage burning me, that hateful stare made me step back.

“Lucius, we have to go!” I said, pulling him along with me.

His big body was dead weight as I dragged him out of the van’s back door. Completely exposed, I used my full strength to haul him to the squad car. People at the pumps were giving me stares at my helpless grunting.

“Move your heavy ass!” I demanded, kicking him in the back of the leg.

He harrumphed but fell through the door’s frame, landing on the seat. I couldn’t get his cuffs off, but at least he was safe. Cursing, I watched the front entrance. All three of the cops walked out and headed for the van. Two of them hopped in their own cars, but the last one.

“Quinn,” he was called, hopped out of the van, and went to the back, ripping the doors open and growling.

Shoving Lucius down in the seat, I started the car and dared one last look at the van.

Bad move.

His gaze caught mine. Shock and anger mingled into one as he ran toward us, yelling. I peeled the squad car out of the lot, the cop’s words blurring as we sped away.

Istared at the woman driving like a bat out of hell beside me.

What the fuck was going on?

“How did you get captured?” she said, looking at me with icy savagery in her eyes.

I didn’t speak. Just stared at her. Watched her pale finger flex on the steering wheel, weaving and turning expertly. She avoided areas she knew would be policed.

“Did the prisoner escape?” she continued, only making me blink at the fluency of lying.

My head throbbed from the bottle. My expensive vodka was ruined by her betrayal. Again, I stayed quiet.

“Lucius!” she yelled, whipping her head to me, her wild pale blonde hair curling and wet. My Little Shadow looked like an angel. But she was the devil—a betraying beast.

“Please,” she begged, her eyes going blurry with unshed tears. “Why won’t you talk to me?”

My silence stretched. She sighed, biting her lip until it bled and letting the tears fall.

“I know you feel betrayed,” she started. Her hand was wiping angrily at her face. “But you have to know I can’t help it!”

She all but screamed, whipping wildly on the road, the motion making me sway into her shoulder. I grunted, trying to push myself back up with my shoulder, but the bumps in the road kept me against her.

“I swear I never would have left. I don’t know what happened. I’ve always been like that.”

That made me pause. What was she even talking about? Studying her face, I searched her eyes. There was not a shred of anything but worry, guilt, and anger. Did she not feel like she had a choice in arresting me? Was her goal ruined by her feelings getting in the way?
