“I’m the king,” he agreed. “And I’ll take that princess.”

Lucius flinched slightly, his composure cracking like a mirror.

“Of course,” he said, smiling the fakest smile I’d ever seen on his face. “But first, a gift for you, my king.”

Holding the apple high in the air, I could see a frothy, white liquid bubbling inside a small hole. Lucius caught my gaze once more, giving me a genuine smile. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a car roll up beside the barn—an army of men got out and stormed toward us.

Lucius’s face paled. His gaze was focused toward the head of the group, on a male that looked so much like Ivy that I had to blink to catch up.

This had to be Lucius’s father.

This was my mark.

The one I’d fought so hard to kill.

“Alyosha,” I growled. Alyosha’s men formed an impenetrable line beside him.

Smirking, he looked at me. “Have we met?”

“No, or you’d already be dead,” I said.

Alyosha laughed. His thick, accented tone was so familiar it felt strange. “You’ve found yourself a leach, my son.” His tone was cool, unattached.

Lucius glared fiery daggers at his father, but he didn’t say a word. He just stared at his father with a look of hatred.

“We’re on a time crunch. Unfortunately, a police officer who had been forced off my payroll caught wind of this and is headed in this direction,” he stated.

Quinn?

The men walked forward, grabbing my arm and pulling me from Lucius’s side, dragging me back to the burning barn.

“No! I’m the king,” Chief Doger shrieked. “You can’t have it!”

Lucius was stoically silent as Alyosha unsheathed a huge sword, slicing off the chief’s head in one fluid motion. Then, his head fell to the ground with a squelching noise. The hands of the guards were firm, my efforts not making a dent as I fought to free myself.

Lucius was fighting them now. He was slashing their bodies into shreds, his bare fists ripping out their hearts, lungs, and entrails. His father simply watched him tear down six of his soldiers. Two of the soldiers were still dragging me. One of them threw open the door to the barn. The smoke billowed out, the heat singing my skin as we got closer and closer.

The two guards locked their arms around mine, throwing us down into the hay at the farthest corner of the barn. The one place it wasn’t a blazing inferno.

They were sent here to die—their last task was to hold me down as I burned. I looked around, only seeing the black and red fire surrounding me.

Was Lucius okay?

Was his father going to kill him?

What about Quinn? What would he do when he got here?

Would he be safe?

What could I do? I had to help them. I had to get out to get free.

I didn’t know who I was anymore. How could I help anyone? Who did they need?

Whowas I?…

Ember?

Ella?
