I frowned.

How could he dismiss my mother? How could he pretend she was just a weakness?

“No,” I yelled, facing off with him again, my pain at the loss of my Little Shadow fueling my body.

“Love shows you your own strength.” His arm snapping left a satisfying crunch as his body slammed to the ground. I pounced on him before he could move, my Little Shadow’s dagger in my palm.

“This is for Eili,” I screamed, slashing a gash on his outstretched arm.

“This is for Mother!” A large line opened his forearm.

Raising the blade above his heart, I said, “This is for my Kayeten!”

But my hand stalled as an ashen form hurled out of the second-story window to the ground.

Alyosha didn’t hesitate, smashing me in the face and running from my grasp.

I heard him running, his body bleeding and weakened. I could kill him. I could chase him down and end this.

But…

My gaze landed on the heap on the ground—the soot-covered form was bloodied and unmoving. Running as fast as my body would carry me, I dropped to the form. There was so much soot and ash that I could barely even make out my Little Shadow. Her blonde hair blackened, her body crumpled.

“No, no, no!” I cradled her and rubbed the ash from her face.

She was not breathing.

“No!”

My tears blinded me as they dripped down onto her coated cheek. I breathed air into her lungs, pumping her chest again and again. The motions blurred as I continued over and over to breathe life into the one thing keeping me alive. She sputtered, her body jolting up and coughing. She got up, and ash fell from her body. Her features were more visible the more she shook. She coughed again and again, but she was breathing.

“Lucius.” Her voice was raspy. It had to be painful and sore.

I shushed her, holding her close to me.

“Yes, I am here E—” I stopped, unsure what to call her.

“I’m no one,” she said, looking around sadly, her tears unshed. I looked at her. Her body was covered in ashes from head to toe, and soot coated her face and hair. I began to chuckle and she was startled, unaware of what I saw.

Kissing her filthy cheek, I smiled. “Baby, you are not no one. You may not be Ella or Ember.” I told her, and her face fell, but picking up her chin, I continued, “But you, sweetheart, have literally risen from the ashes. You are born anew.”

I paused. “You are my Phoenix.”

With her eyes wide, I kissed her deeply.

Istalked in the shadows with Lucius by my side. His warmth cocooning me in the darkness, Quinn was in the window. The bright look on his face was a joy to see. He was being promoted tonight. He was the new chief. Finally, we had a good human in charge who wasn’t bat-shit mad. They were placing a medal on his shirt, mouthing words I couldn’t hear, but I knew he was telling the crowd of Micah Quinn’s heroic achievement of catching the Snow White killer.

They were now explaining how he found the suspect at an abandoned barn, how the notorious serial killer had committed suicide and finally met her own end in a fiery blaze. Also, drugs from the cartel were littered around the area, and an apple was lying at the scene.

Everyone was shocked but Micah Quinn. Now, he was the head of the special victim’s unit. The place he always wanted to be. The place to avenge his sister and find his own peace.

Smiling, I let Lucius pull me into his hot embrace. Giggling, I grabbed his hand and led him to the high school by the station.

It was easy enough to sneak into the pool area, and Lucius looked like a kid when he did a cannonball into the deep end. I laughed and traipsed around, letting him get a good look at me in my bra and panties. His eyes were heavy, and I could see his pants tenting under the water. Giggling, I made a ‘come here’ motion while lying on my back and spreading my legs open.

Lucius hummed his approval, which made me moan. His water-drenched body hopped up on the side, pulling him out of the pool. All but running to me, he flopped down and mounted me, his hard length pressing into my panties. Growling, he ripped them off, then dove onto my pussy. I felt his lips and his tongue working their magic. Letting out a moan, I ground into his face, riding the pleasure but pulling back right before I got there.

With a groan, he glared at me. “Why didn’t you soak my face, love?”

I dropped my eyes to his, leaning and whispering in the most seductive voice, “I could, but are you wet from me or the pool?”

He smiled a dangerous smile, ready to bury his face back into my heat, but I took my foot and shoved him into the pool.

His body splashed from his awkward flip, and his sputtering gasp made me laugh out loud.

“Well…” I said, standing up and giving him my best devilish grin. “Looks like you’re soaked now.”

THE END
