“Of course,” I beamed at him. Luckily he had moved out of the way before Anna pretended to gag. She was still firmly in the Grant-is-boring camp. But she didn’t appreciate stability and ambition as attractive qualities in a mate.

“Great job today, sweet pea.” My head snapped up at the nickname coming from the alpha that was walking up to me.

“Sweet pea?” Grant stepped up, glaring at Will. Will ignored him though, completely focused on me.

“That’s your scent, isn’t it? Sweet peas? The delicate little flower?” The questions sounded so seductive coming from him. I think my brain was just getting scrambled from the two alphas’ scents swirling around me. So similar and yet so distinctive.

“Yeah, it is,” I whispered, my voice huskier than I expected.

He grinned and then walked right out the door like he hadn’t stolen the air from the room.

“Mia!” I looked over at a confused Grant. Apparently this wasn’t the first time he’d tried to get my attention. “Sweet peas? I thought it was just a wildflower scent?”

“No, it’s sweet peas,” I answered, shaking off the haze. I needed to focus on this alpha in front of me, not the bad idea that just walked out. I gave him my sweetest smile. “Sounds like you just need some more quality time with my scent.” He might’ve blushed.

“Yes, please, Omega.”

Chapter Fourteen

“Thisisadumbidea.” I stared out at Briar Lake and all the idiots running into the freezing water.

“But that’s why it’s fun! Come on!” Tanner dragged me toward the shore. How did he keep talking me into this shit? I’d worn my most conservative bathing suit, but I knew that wasn’t going to save me from the cold.

The Polar Plunge was a Briar Lake tradition. And it was a dumb one. Every winter, hundreds of students ran into the freezing waters of Briar Lake. Some stayed in for just moments while others, the craziest, stayed in much longer. Students had come out earlier to break up ice along the shore so we could even get in the water. Dumb.

Tanner grabbed my hand, and his long legs pulled us toward our icy doom. The first hit of water was like a million little pinpricks of ice. I only made it to my waist before I ran back out.

“Come on, Mia! It’s not that bad!” he hollered from where he was neck deep. I would’ve been completely underwater there. No, thank you.

I was already wrapped in two thick towels when he came to his senses and walked back up the shore to me.

“Give me one of those towels.”

“Absolutely not. You snooze, you lose,” I huffed.

“One of those was supposed to—Oh! There’s Kara! Catch you later!” He ran off down the beach like the below-freezing weather didn’t bother him at all. He was an alpha though, and they tended to run hot.

I looked around at all the other insane people out here today.

Will was finally coming out of the water with Hunter and some of their friends. I tried not to notice that Will was shirtless, but I failed. Miserably. I knew the guy was athletic, but he was practically carved from stone. My scent flooded the area as my appreciation turned into arousal. As if he could feel me watching, Will scanned the shore until he found me. As soon as we locked eyes, I looked away. Flushing red at being caught ogling him, I searched the crowd for someone, anyoneelse to talk to.

Like the knight in shining armor that he was, I caught sight of Grant down the beach and hurried to him.

I slid up behind him, placing my hands on his back. “Hey, handsome.”

He spun and, realizing it was me, took a step back. “Oh, hey, Mia. I didn’t expect to see you here. Doesn’t seem like your kinda thing.”

“It’s usually not, but Tanner said it was practically mandatory, so here I am. Why are you so far away?” I pouted and took a step toward him, but keeping the distance between us, he took one back. “Did you put on sunscreen for the plunge today? I can barely smell you. No offense, I just don’t like the smell of sunscreen that much.”

“Yeah, yeah, I did. It’s got a strong scent. Listen, I gotta run. I’ll see you at the next event.”

With that, Grant practically bolted off the beach, leaving me confused.

I was still wet from the water, and the freezing temperatures out here were making me miserable. Well, that added on top of Grant’s abrupt departure. No omega wanted to be dismissed.

Tanner still looked happy snuggled up with Kara, and Will was watching me with a concerned look, clearly having seen my interaction with Grant. He started to drift my way, but like always, I turned and headed away from him. I was done here anyway.
