Anger looks good on her.

She tosses her head back and places her hands on her rounded hips. The light from the torches shines down on her, highlighting the lines of her body underneath the white nightdress that she wears.

“We were supposed to be friends!” She spits the words at Rhiucra. When I look at my brother, his face is crestfallen, and he looks absolutely heartbroken.

“Because that’s what you kept saying, all the time I’ve been working here!” Neveah continues. “You’re not just a servant, Neveah, you’re my friend! Here, have these books, Neveah! Let’s go on walks, Neveah! Have some of this fine food, come to dinner with me, Neveah!”

“You are my friend!” Rhiucra says quickly and takes a step toward Neveah, but she lifts her hands, and he stops in his tracks.

“No! I’m not!” There is venom in Neveah’s voice.

And in that moment, I have never been more attracted to her than I am now.

“All I am to you is someone you want to bed. You were never really my friend. All you were doing was using me!”

Her voice wavers, and her bright, sharp green eyes are glassy with angry tears, and I have a sudden, irrational need to comfort her.

But she doesn’t need me for that. Instead, Neveah wipes her eyes and continues to rant at Rhiucra, not unlike the way he was just ranting at me.

I look around as Neveah continues to cuss Rhiucra out, and I find a chair. Using my magic, I lift the chair into the air and drag it over to where I am standing.

Then, angling the chair so that I have a perfect view of Neveah and Rhiucra, I sit down and cross one leg over the other.

I lace my fingers together while the knife remains in my lap, as Neveah practically shouts at Rhiucra.

I am surprised that no one has woken up and come to see what is happening.

They’re all too afraid of me to dare to come out of their rooms,I think to myself.

Part of me is glad that Neveah now knows that I am Rhiucra’s brother and that I am an Ilnais.

Maintaining the mystery of who I am, and driving her crazy with it, was worth it, but now she knows that I belong here.

And she also knows that her supposed best friend, Rhiucra, just wanted her pussy all along, and nothing else.

That has to be degrading for her. I’m surprised she hasn’t clawed his eyes out yet.

When Neveah is done with Rhiucra, she turns to me, with her face flushed and her chest heaving.

I smile wickedly at her and lift the knife that is carefully in my lap. I point the blade in the direction of Rhiucra.

“Do you want me to kill him, little liar?” My voice is almost gentle. But I am quite sure that Neveah knows I have never been more serious.

I would absolutely kill my brother for her,I think reflectively, nonchalantly, to myself.

Our mother would likely die from shock and heartbreak if I were to kill my brother, but she’s such a waste of space that I’d be doing Protheka, and my father, a favor.

“I can’t believe this,” Neveah whispers. When I look at her, I see that she is talking more to herself than to Rhiucra or me.

“I can’t believe any of this.” She rounds on Rhiucra then, and he flinches away from her ire. I let out a short, barking laugh.

“I can’t believe you’ve lied to me and used me like this.” This time, Neveah doesn’t wipe the tears away.

“I’m so sorry,” Rhiucra whispers. His own eyes are glassy, and I cannot help but roll my eyes at my brother’s theatrics.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you. I didn’t mean to destroy our friendship like this. You must know, I never meant to do this. I couldn’t help but fall for you, Neveah! But I didn’t mean for it to end up like this!”

“Well, it is too late now.” Neveah’s voice is wooden, devoid of emotion. “Youhaveruined it, no matter what you planned to do. You were one of the few people I could trust in this place! Do you know how difficult it is for a human woman to find anyone to trust in Protheka?”
