“My uncle was a good man. A great man. A man who belonged to the upper echelons of dark elf society. But more importantly, when my mother died giving birth to me, he raised me as his own. He did not have to. He had his own children to think about. But he gave me a life and helovedme.”

Aricen’s voice wavers on the last words of the sentence though his eyes harden.

“I’m sorry.” I try to sound sympathetic. I really try.

But Aricen is not convinced.

“Luocre Ilnais is a scourge upon Protheka! He must be stopped! And I am the only one who can stop him!”

“How are you going to do that?”Why are you asking him so many questions? He’s just going to kill you in the end.

“I’m going to kill you. You’re the only thing he cares about. Once I take you away from him, he’ll be weak, vulnerable.”

I see movement in the shadows of the warehouse then. And as I focus on them, I see that they are dark elves.

They probably work for Aricen,I think to myself, but he must read my mind.

“These dark elves have all lost someone to the blade of Luocre Ilnais. When I proposed that we do something about him, they jumped at the chance.”

“How can you be with him?” A dark elf noblewoman spits the words at me. There is venom in her eyes, and I look away from her.

I am not willing to explain myself to any of these people. Mostly because I still don’t understand why I want to be with Luocre.

There is a scream in the distance then. It is faint, and I almost disregard it, but Aricen’s shoulders stiffen, and he reaches for the sword that is sheathed at his hips.

The other dark elves in the room take their cue from Aricen, and I watch as weapons are pulled from sheaths, belts, and holsters.

My eyes widen at the sheer number of deadly implements in the room with me, and I swallow with fear as I think about Luocre.

Is he coming for me? I know that he is skilled, but surely he can’t face the sheer force of all these weapons?

More screams follow the first one. And I watch as, one by one, the dark elves in the warehouse are slaughtered by a figure wearing black.

Luocre!

I don’t want to watch because it is brutal and violent. But I am mesmerized by every move that Luocre makes.

He uses multiple weapons and moves with immense speed and force. He rips through bodies, beheading and scalping several dark elves.

I watch as Luocre gouges eyes out, and rips one of the dark elves’ tongues out.

Aricen gives a huge shout and pulls the sword from its sheath as Luocre cuts down everyone in his path.

“You won’t take me, scum!” Aricen shouts and leaps through the air, the sword arcing behind him.

Luocre just smiles and side steps as Aricen tries to bring the sword down on him.

Aricen whips around, but Luocre has already plunged a dagger into his throat.

Luocre holds the dagger there for several, long minutes before he twists it.

Aricen gives a strangled cry, and I watch as his eyes bulge from their sockets. He flails his arms and stumbles away from Luocre before he drops to the floor.

The female dark elf is the only one still alive. She is hiding, but I hear her whimper and I look over at her.

Luocre does, too.

He walks over to the corner where she is hiding, and this time, I do close my eyes and look away when he kills her.
