Rebecca stood up and rubbed my back. "It was Lexi. Sorry I didn't say more on the phone, but she had paparazzi with her."

True sighed. "What happened?"

I leaned back and looked up into his concerned blue eyes, getting lost in their depths. "She told me that there was no way you'd ever want me over her, and then she threatened to go to the media with, and I quote, proofthat your real relationship is the one you have with her. Oh, and she also said you've been texting and calling her at night and spending time with her when you tell me you're working."

His jaw ticked, and anger radiated off of him, but he didn't let me go. "You don't believe her, right?" His voice sounded gravelly tinged with a little bit of fear.

I reached up and cupped his face with my palm. "Of course I didn't believe her. You're the most honest person I know. She's been nothing but a liar. I know you love me, even if I don't understand why sometimes."

He noticed the angry scratches down my arm, and his expression turned murderous. "I'll kill her."

"I'm okay. Let's just go home."

He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine, wiping away the last of my tears with gentle fingers. He loosened his grip on me, wrapping one arm around my waist and guiding me into his Jeep. When I was safely inside, he walked back to his mom, talking with her briefly before hugging her and grabbing the bags and tossing them in the back. He climbed in after me and grabbed my hand.

"Those were supposed to go to your mom's house. We don't have room." A small smile played at my lips.

He slid his Wayfarers down onto his face and flashed me a crooked grin before kissing the back of my hand. "I'll take them over there tomorrow. Right now, I just want to get you home. Okay?"

"Okay." I relaxed back into the seat before bolting upright again. "How'd she know who I was?"

True turned down the music and glanced over at me before putting his eyes back on the road. "What?"

"Lexi. She knew exactly who I was when she saw my face. How?"

True's expression darkened. "I don't know, but I'm going to find out."

It'd been one long-ass fucking week while I dodged Lexi's calls and texts and braced myself for her to release whatever it was she thought she had on me. I knew better. I knew she didn't have shit, which made me more scared because I didn't know what the hell she was up to. She could say anything to the media, and they would believe her even if it wasn't right.

Instead of working out of my mom's house this week, Amara had been sticking close to my side. I didn't want her out of my sight any more than she wanted to be. We decided a long time ago that whatever came out of this situation, we'd face together, and that's what we were doing.

Now that a week had gone by, I had to wonder if Lexi was bluffing after all. That maybe she wanted to scare me into going to see her, but I refused to give her the satisfaction of that. Somehow I didn't think it was going to be that easy.

As the sun peeked over the horizon and splashed the first weak golden rays across the sky, I looked down at the woman in my arms, holding her just a little tighter. I wished I could protect her from this, and I'd tried my best, but it seemed like she was destined to get tangled up in my mess.

My phone vibrated on the table beside me. I reached over to silence it before looking at the screen.Harrison.Fuck. That couldn't be good, it was barely sunrise.

I gently untangled myself from Amara before pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. I watched as she settled deeper into the tangled sheets before I slid out of bed, plucking my phone off the charger and padding silently out to the kitchen. As soon as my phone had stopped ringing, it started right back up.

Double fuck.

"Good morning, Harrison." I figured I could at least be pleasant even if I doubted this call would be. I was tired of being mad at one of my best friends. He hadn't known what was going to happen with Lexi, and I didn't want to hold it against him anymore. I wasn't the kind of guy who held grudges. Life was too short for that shit.

"I wouldn't exactly say that," he grumbled. "I was up before the sun, mate, and it wasn't to play on the break."

I gripped the counter. "What's going on?"

"I wish I wasn't making this call. I don't know how many more times I can apologize to you for this stunt." He blew out a slow breath as if gathering his thoughts. "Have you looked at CNT yet this morning?"

My throat suddenly felt parched. "No, I don't make it a habit of checking gossip sites first thing in the morning." Or ever.

"Go on, then. Click in. I'll wait."

Pulling my phone away from my ear, I navigated to the page, and my stomach lurched at the top headline. "EXCLUSIVE: Lexi Lovecroft Tells All!"

I didn't click it. I didn't have to to know it would be filled with bullshit lies I had no interest in reading. I put the phone back up to my ear. "I saw the headline, but I didn't click in. Why's that so bad? Who cares if she tells a bunch of lies to the tabloids. I don't."

"You should. You didn't read it, but it's bad. I'm coming over so we can talk about it."
