“Yes, Rose, my former fiancée who decided to step out on me in public.”

I stare at him, intrigued by the audacity. “Will she agree?”

He gives me a look like I should know the answer to that question. I turn so that I’m facing him straight on, and just study him, taking him in from head to toe. Yes, this man would go up to a woman who wronged him and tell her to deliver a message for him.

“Besides, we’ve established that she knows Tiziano well. She can givehimthe message.”

I can’t help but smile. It’s poetic I must admit.

It’s funny, I grew up viewing the Monti heir as just some meat head who went around smashing things and being a nuisance. I was so wrong about him.

I run a hand down his cheek and leaned in to kiss it before licking along his jaw and biting his ear. He makes a small sound, too low and short to be called a groan but his desire is apparent. “Marry me,” I whisper to him.

His head swivels and looks me intently in the eye. “Are you serious?”

“You bet I am.”

He blinks and blinks again and I begin to feel insecure. Am I going too fast? Maybe this isn’t what he wants.

“Okay.”

“You don’t have-…what?” I squeak.

“Okay. Let’s get married. Hey, what are our families gonna do if we’ve already tied the knot?”

I can feel my heart thudding, blood roaring in my ears.

Is this really happening?

“Are you sure?” I ask softly.

“A hundred percent. Let’s do it.”

I reach out and lace our right hands together. “Do you know someone who can do it?”

He grimaces. “I know someone I can ask. But he won’t be happy about it.”

“But you see that it’s the only option, right? There’s no way we can convince our families that we’re meant to be. We have to present them with the fact.”

He looks at me, all trace of laughter gone from his eyes. “I don’t want to marry you because it’s the only option,” he says and my stomach drops. I knew it was too good to be true. “I want to marry you because I love you.”

This man is going to give me a stroke. “Oh…”

He leans in, eyes on my mouth. “So, tell me Miss Cardinali, why do you want to marryme? Is it just to escape the clutches of that old man? Or do you have feelings for me too?”

I have to side eye him for fishing like that, “YouknowI adore you. You've known it for two years.”

He tries to be coy, “Have I?”

“Hell yeah. What do you think we've been doing all this time?”

He shrugs one shoulder. “Stress relief?”

I snort. “There are easier ways. I could go for a run, play a game of squash, or go do some boxing at the gym. Why make myself so vulnerable, for shits and giggles?”

He smiles, “Boxing huh? I guess I better watch my step.”

“Oh, you laugh now but yeah, you better.”
