“Is it?” he glanced at me before looking back at the road, “A consolation?”

I shrug, twisting my lips. “Mostly I just try not to think about it.”

“Does it work?”

“Eh.” I cock my head to the side, my vision blurring a bit from the moisture in my eyes. Of course, it hurts. Of course, I feel rejected. But there’s no use dwelling on it, is there?

We turn down a tree lined dirt road, the trees so close together that it’s quite dim beneath them. I like it. It feels safe. Certainly, there are no cameras out here to accidentally record our reflections.

It feels like Romano and I are in a cocoon with no one but ourselves. “You didn’t tell me how your meeting with Rose went.”

He turns to look at me. “Rose? She was fine. She even tried to apologize. Her father was mad at her and told her to make amends. I told her that the only amends I wished her to make was to go to the Montis and give them my message.”

I nod. “Did you get a reply?”

“No. Rose gave the message to Tiziano who was supposed to give it to your dad. She’s waiting to see what message he brings back.”

“Well, that should give us some time to have a real honeymoon.”

He gives a sidelong smile. “I love your priorities.”

“C’mon, you haven’t even spanked me once. I’m jonesing here.”

He turns to give me a searing glance. “Don’t worry, I brought all our toys with us.”

I grin widely, stretching languidly. “Oh, I can hardly wait.”

We arrive at the end of the road a few minutes later and then turn down a smaller lane. The Range Rover is almost too big for it. The trees are thicker and more luxuriant the further into the lane we go.

I chuckle. “I almost feel like little red riding hood or maybe Hansel and Gretel, lost in the forest and heading for the witch’s cabin.”

“What flights of fancy you have my dear.” He simpers at me.

I grin widely, “The better to enjoy you, my dear.”

He gives me a look and cocks his eyebrow.

“What?” I ask.

“Do you want to play a game?”

My heart rate increases at once. “Umm, yes?”

He smiles. “Good.” He opens the door and alights the vehicle, coming around to my side to let me out. He looks me up and down assessing me.

“Hmm, white lacy dress, innocent, virginal… I don’t suppose you have a red coat with you?”

I give him a look. “Now where would I get a red coat?”

“Good point.”

Something occurs to me and I gasp. “Wait. What game do you want to play? Red riding hood?”

He grins at me. “Bingo.”

“Are we roleplaying our marriage consummation?” I stare at him with wide eyes.

He shrugs. “Why not?”
