I let out a sigh, feeling a mix of sympathy and irritation.

“Mildred, we can’t keep going in circles like this. It’s time to move forward. I don’t do love. We both know this.”

She wipes her tears and attempts a watery smile.

“You’re right, Jeffrey. Does it mean you don’t love her, too?”

“Does it mean when you’re tired of her, you will leave her too?” She asks excitedly. I gape at her, wondering what has gotten into her.

“Are you serious right now?” I respond, shocked by her question.

“What? That bitch, Phebe, ruined us,” Mildred says, her tone bitter.

“Watch your tongue. Besides, there was no us to begin with.” I glare at her.

“Good thing is when you’re tired of her, you will come back to me,” she says with a smile. I glance at her and, raising an eyebrow. She clearly has no clue what she’s talking about. I’ve tried to clear my mind of Phebe, but all my attempts have failed. Speaking of which, I need to act quickly before my emotions gets out of control. Besides, I have no intention of going back to Mildred, but there is no point in telling her that.

She looks at me hopefully, a glimmer in her eye.

“Could I... stay the night? It’s going to be hard to find a good hotel at this hour,” she says.

I hesitate, unsure if it’s a good idea. But then again, it’s late and letting her stay won’t be a big deal.

“Alright, you can stay the night. But you have to leave tomorrow morning,” I say.

She beams at me, her sudden change in attitude unsettling.

“Thank you, Jeffrey. I promise I won’t be a bother.”

I nod, hoping she keeps her words. My thoughts drift back to Phebe, and I still can’t think of what to do with her.

PHEBE

Phebe

Aheavy knot weighs on my chest as I enter the dining room for dinner. The pain in my heart is almost unbearable after witnessing Jeffrey and Mildred hugging earlier. It feels like my world has been torn apart, leaving me lost and broken.

As I step into the dining room, my heart sinks even further when I come face to face with Mildred. Her presence here confirms my worst fear—she and Jeffrey are back together. Jealousy, anger, and heartache churn inside me, but I put on a composed facade.

“Phebe,” she purrs, her voice filled with satisfaction.

“What a surprise to see you here.”

I swallow the lump in my throat and offer a forced smile.

“Mildred. It’s been a while.”

She smirks, mischief gleaming in her eyes.

“Indeed, it has. But don’t worry, I’m back now.”

I clench my fists, nails digging into my palms as I fight to keep my emotions.

“I hope you’re enjoying your time.”

“Oh, Phebe, you have no idea.” Mildred’s laughter echoes, sharp and mocking.
