Jolene nodded. “I understand. I can keep it between us, but you don’t have to tell me anything you don’t feel comfortable sharing. It just fascinates me is all.”

Rex smiled, and Jolene took a larger sip of her whiskey to coat her mouth that suddenly felt dry. “The story goes… the God of Chaos was causing too much trouble on the earth, causing the gods to make a decision to pull away from humanity to try to limit their involvement and influence. However, they have responsibilities, so they had to have champions living among the humans to do the deeds they used to. I guess the gods all had their favorite creatures, and through magic, they fused those creatures with humans causing a number of different new creatures… like shifters. So the original champions were created by the gods through magic.”

Jolene’s brain started spinning with the possibilities. “What other creatures are there? Does that make you a champion of the gods? Is this just a tale that you heard? Is there proof?”

His chuckle sounded in the air as he reached out and set his glass down on the table. “Whoa. Okay. One question at a time. My poor old brain can’t keep up.” He stopped laughing, but his smile stayed in place. “As for other creatures, there are the usual suspects – vampires, witches, dragon shifters, etc.”

“Vampires? Dragons?” She knew her voice was rising, butholy shit!

He nodded. “I’ve met a few. The dragon shifters aren’t so bad. Came in clutch during the battle we fought. The vampires, however…” He sighed. “They are arrogant.”

She scoffed and took a drink of her whiskey. “Wouldn’t you be? Fuck. I bet they never even have to try to get laid. Partners just fall into their beds, left and right. I’d bet on it.”

He raised a brow, amusement in his eyes. “Yeah, those vampires must have it easy, unlike us poor measly wolf shifter bikers. Always have to be out here begging for a pity fuck.”

She rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah… I should’ve been a vampire. Probably wouldn’t have had to cook.”

She snorted a laugh. “Smartass.”

“I try.” He reached out and took hold of her free hand, just holding it on the cushion between them. “To answer the rest of your questions, no, I’m not a champion of the gods, but I guess you could consider me a descendent of the original champions. As for proof, I met some of the champions, myself, and Axle has met one of the gods, so… yeah, we’ve seen proof.”

She shook her head in astonishment. “This is… I have a hard time wrapping my head around all of this.”

He nodded. “I know. I imagine it’s easier for me since I’ve been a shifter my whole life. Makes believing in all of this much easier.”

“So, you were born this way.”

“Yup. One of your parents has to be a shifter in order for you to be one. Like Nevaeh, for instance, she is a wolf shifter, too. Her mother is full-human.”

“Obviously, there are more than just wolves around here, since I treated a tiger.”

“Right. We have some lions and some bears, too. Not all of the members of the club are shifters. There are some humans.”

“And Axle is your president?”

“Yeah.” He ran his thumb along the back of her fingers. “He’s the president of the Howlers. Crush is the president of the Claws. Both clubs work very closely together, so we’re a big family.”

“It’s really awesome you have that. I’m sure it was great for Nevaeh… to have a big family to watch out for her.”

His smile widened again. “She loved it when she was a kid. For a few of her teen years, she might have traded them in. It’s hard to date when you have eighteen uncles who wear leather, have tattoos, and ride motorcycles.”

Jolene laughed. “Oh no. Did you all ruin her dates?”

He shrugged. “Ididn’t, but I won’t comment on whether my club brothers did.”

Shaking her head at him, she tsked. “That poor girl.”

They both laughed for a few moments, before it faded and Rex uttered, “Can we address the elephant in the room?”

“Is that another kind of shifter?”

He rolled his eyes, but they were still sparkling with the proof of his enjoyment of their conversation. “You have a way of giving orders, instead of making requests. And a time or two, you’ve said things that have alluded to… the fact that you like to be in control. How far does that reach?”

Jolene took another drink of her whiskey and set the glass on the coffee table. She wasn’t sure if they were going to broach that subject on their first date, but there it was, right out in the open. She wasn’t about to hide who she was or what her needs and boundaries were. If they were going to do this, he needed to know what he was getting from the very beginning, and it would be the perfect opportunity for her to find out what he was comfortable with and what he was not.

Turning so she was facing him on the couch, mirroring his position, she met his gaze and answered, “I am most comfortable in a position of control in most areas of my life. It doesn’t need to be a constant thing, but I desire it more often than not.”
