Giggling, Ginger wiggled her brows at him. “I heard you found yourself a woman who was…bossy.”

“I did.” Rex grinned back at her. “Seriously… I’m not trying to cockblock.”

Top snorted a laugh. “Rex, as much as I love and respect you, if you walked in while I was trying to get in Ginger’s pants, your presence wouldn’t stop me. We were just talking about the kids.”

“Oh.” Rex sighed, all humor gone. “I was followed again this morning. Axle is pulling everyone in, including the Ol’ Ladies and children. He wants us to watch over them while the clubs have church.”

Ginger and Top both sat up, concerned. “What in hell is going on?” Ginger asked as her brows pulled together. “Why are they following our clubs?Whois following us?”

“Axle suspects it has something to do with the hunter academy, but he doesn’t have confirmation,” Rex answered.

Top let out a sigh and ran his hand through his curly brown hair. It wasn’t long, but the curl game was strong with that one. “You gonna call your doctor in?”

Rex just stared at him for a long moment. They hadn’t even talked about mating, and Rex hadn’t yet claimed her at the table, but she was his Ol’ Lady nonetheless. Would she listen if he asked her to stay with him at the compound? He didn’t know.

“Guess I’ll try,” he finally answered.

Jolene

AftergivingtheBasenjiin room four its shots and cuddles, Jolene headed out of the examination room and went to her desk. She checked her phone and saw that she had a text from Rex.

REX : When you get a minute, I need it.

Confused and concerned, Jolene sent a text back.

JOLENE : Emergency? Otherwise, I have one more patient before lunch. Can call you at twelve.

She sat at her computer and set the phone down on the desk next to her mouse. As she notated the Basenji’s chart, she kept glancing at her phone. A few minutes later, it finally pinged with a new message.

REX : Call at lunch. Between now and then, just keep your eyes out for suspicious people. I’ll explain more later.

Warning bells went off as she read his words. Something was wrong…reallywrong. Checking the time, she saw that her patient should already be in the waiting room, so she couldn’t cancel the appointment or delay it. Whatever was going on would have to wait until after.

JOLENE : Will call as soon as next appt done

She was distracted from her concern when the only thing sent back was a red heart emoji. Her mind began to spin about what that heart meant. Was he just trying to tell her that he cared? Was he just acknowledging her message? Was he trying to tell her something bigger? He couldn’t be trying to tell her that. They’d only had two dates! Sure, they’d met months ago, and the man could make a mean cup of coffee, but—

Jolene shook her head and forced herself not to go down that rabbit hole. She had a job to do. The rest could wait until later.

Rex

“What in the hell are you doing on my phone?” Rex snatched his phone from Ginger’s hand and set it back on the side table that butted up against both the couch and the armchair.

Ginger grinned. “Just giving your relationship a little nudge. You got up to use the bathroom and got a message while you were gone. She’ll call you after her next appointment, by the way.”

Rex narrowed his eyes and picked up his phone. After opening up his text string with Doc, he sighed. No doubt his pretty mate was going to have a million questions about that one red heart.

Shrugging, he set his phone back down. Doc’s questions would give him the perfect opening to the mate conversation. He needed to talk to her about it, in order to give her time to think it through, because shewouldinsist on weighing the pros and cons.

Figuring Ginger did him a favor, he didn’t bother arguing with her about it.

“Wow. No scowl? No whining? No tantrums?”

Rex flipped her off.

“If you haven’t already, and I doubt you have, because you’ve lived your life like an eternal bachelor, tell the woman how you feel. It’s not just your wolf, and we both know it.”
