FollowingAxleintowhatlooked to be an office at the back of the clubhouse building, with the blond walking behind her with his gun in hand, Messer gave thanks that they at least spared her life. She had no illusions that she would make it out unscathed, but she’d be happy to just make it out alive.

“Sit,” the blond ordered.

Messer sat down in one of the visitor chairs in the room, across the desk from where Axle was now sitting.

“What is this important information?” Axle asked, leaning forward, with his forearms resting on the top of the desk.

After taking another deep breath and sending up another prayer, Messer let it all out. She told them why she was in town, who came with her, and admitted they had been following various members. She explained that she didn’t have any authority on the mission, and that she had been demoted when she didn’t bring back enough new information after her first trip to Warden’s Pass. After she got through all of that, she said, “Yesterday, they put trackers on Rex’s truck and a female’s car. I think you call her Shortcake. This morning, they shot them up with an altered shifter blocker and kidnapped them.”

“What?!” The blond put his gun to her temple.

“Where. Are. They?” Axle’s growled question was accompanied by a silver light, announcing the level of his rage.

“She’s gone,” Messer admitted quietly and sucked in a breath, waiting for the shot, afraid to move too much with the muzzle of the gun against her skin. When it didn’t come, she exhaled slowly. “Rex was still alive when I snuck out. I was horrified by what they were doing and couldn’t…” She closed her eyes and then reopened them. “It wasn’t right. I doubt they’re still there, though. They were—”

Axle’s phone rang, and he instantly answered it. “Mama Hen, I’m bus—”

Blondie and Messer waited while Axle listened to the hotel owner. His eyes widened.

“He’s stable?” More silence. “Where the fuck is Doc?” He winced. “Okay. Sorry. Isaidsorry. Do you know where Doc is?” He listened, then he thanked Mama Hen. “Get everyone in here, right now,” Axle ordered to blondie.

“Prez,” Blondie began to protest.

“Now,Pike. Whoever is on site.”

Blondie grumbled, but he turned and left the room. Messer finally breathed normally without the gun pointed at her.

“You know you aren’t free, right?” Axle glared at her. “You are our prisoner. And you better hope we’re able to find him and that he’s alive. I will let Crush decide what your punishment for Shortcake will be.”

“I understand, but know I didn’t take part in the kidnapping or the… questioning.”

Axle let out a humorless laugh. “You are who you hang out with,” he told her and nodded to the logo on her polo shirt.

Less than a minute later, six grown men walked into the room, but she only had eyes for one.Matthew.They locked gazes for a moment, his chocolate brown eyes showing recognition. Her eyes scanned his body and halted on the leather cut he was wearing. She was stunned.

Pulling her focus from him, she felt her heart begin to pound harder in her chest. Was he playing them or had he been playing her?Fuck!

Axle quickly ran through what she told them before he demanded she write down the address of the location she last saw the Elites.

“If they dropped Rex off somewhere, they won’t be there anymore. And I don’t know where they would go. They didn’t exactly trust me.”

There were some rumbles in the crowd of bikers, but it was drowned out by Axle’s commanding voice. “We need someone to fill Crush in. We also need someone to watch the prisoner and protect her from Crush… for now.”

“I got it, Prez,” Matthew said in that low, growly voice of his. It both comforted and terrified her.

Axle eyed him for a moment, then he gave a nod. “Brute, stay with him. The rest of you in the vans. Now.”

Rex

It would have been easier for Rex to identify where hedidn’thurt than for him to catalog his injuries. They had made sure to tag all of his limbs, and that was before the beat-down. As he laid on the floor of Doc’s foyer, waiting for her to return, he wondered how long the newest variant of the shifter blocker would stay in his system.

Trying yet again, he was unable to sense his wolf. The space where his wolf should be was just empty. That was the most worrying. Sure, Crush got her tiger back, but it was a different variant of the drug than they gave her. On top of that, he worried about how long it would take to heal. With shifter healing he would be right as rain in a few days, but it didn’t seem to be working.

He ignored the increased throbbing in his head and face as he turned it to look around for Doc, but he couldn’t see her anywhere.Where did she go?He didn’t remember much after she reset his nose.

Hearing a whimper, Rex shifted his head again to look down along his side. Beast was slowly easing in his direction, sadness and concern in those dark brown eyes. He let out another whimper as he approached Rex’s face, then he licked his cheek before Beast laid his little Yorkie body down and cuddled into the crook of Rex’s neck.

Rex smiled, even though he was still hurting. It was an extreme measure to go to in order to get a dog to accept him, but he’d do anything for Doc.
