Bullet continued, “Doc killed the four responsible for this, and Messer, the one Trick was watching, is locked up in the basement.”

Her eyes shot to Bullet. “We have one locked up?”

His eyes narrowed as he stared back at her. “Crush, no.”

She ignored him as she turned and pushed through her club sisters. As she left the room, Nails and Pinky followed behind her.

After heading down the hall, down the stairs, and through the clubhouse to the basement, Crush spotted Brute standing right outside the cell room. The bulky black man’s eyes widened when he saw her and her two club sisters heading his way.

He held up his hands in an attempt to ward them off. “Crush, I’m under orders. You can’t go in there.”

“You’re not my boss and neither is Axle.”

He tilted his head to the side a bit and raised a brow. “But this is our clubhouse,” he replied. “I can’t let you in.”

As much as they shared the clubhouse, Brute wasn’t wrong. It was the property of the Howlers MC, not the Tiger’s Claw MC. He had every right not to let her in, but she didn’t have to like it.

Her eyes glowed a greenish gold as she let out a low growl and stepped to the side. Looking past Brute and spotting the hunter sitting on the floor against the wall, she pointed a finger and promised, “I will kill you! I will make it slow and painful! You will regret every fucking thing you shared with that damn academy. And when I’m done with you, I will burn that fucking place to the damn ground!”

The hunter just stared back at her.

Crush stepped forward, basically up against Brute, as she continued, “You thought we were monsters before?” She gave a laugh she knew sounded evil. “You have no idea how much of a monster I can be.”

Taking comfort in the fear shining from the hunter’s eyes, Crush let her fangs slide down and hissed at the hunter before she turned and stormed away.

Bythetimeshereturned to town, Siren and a few other Howlers had moved Rex to his room at the compound. At the time the decision had been made, they didn’t know she had taken out the hunters. Siren made a judgment call that the compound was the safest place for Rex to be, and in Doc’s opinion, that was the right call.

Mama Hen had brought Beast to her house after she convinced the scared pup to come out from under the guest room bed where he took off to after the Howlers had shown up. Doc was grateful for that, so it took that worry off her shoulders for the time being.

Hours later, sitting in the chair next to his bed, she glanced down at her hand holding Rex’s. She didn’t remember when she sat down or when she grabbed his hand, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was howinshe was with having a relationship with Rex.

Was there a lot about shifters and the mate stuff that still left her with questions? Yes, absolutely, but she was sure there would never come a day where she wasn’t askinghow, what, orwhen. She was a doctor, after all, a scientist with a need to understand the root cause and the inner workings of everything. However, when faced with the very real possibility of his death, Doc realized her questions were not enough to justify denying the truth.

She was his mate.

She was his.

He was hers.

They were meant to be.

Doc felt it in her heart and soul. The chemistry between them was off the charts. He appreciated the quirks in her that often drove others insane. She cherished his charming arrogance and his humor. He was extremely open-minded with her. The least she could do would be to return the favor.

Time after time, he had proven to her that he was mature and ready to be the man she needed him to be. She had laid the challenge down, and he rose to it. Now she needed to step up and give him the same commitment in return.

Truthfully, wasn’t that all any woman wanted anyway? To have someone who was made for them? To have a person love them for who they were, without expecting them to change? Rex was that person. He just happened to also be a wolf shifter. As a vet, that wasn’t exactly a deterrent. Animals were quite literally her gig.

Did she love him? Yes, she absolutely did. She wanted to spend her life with him. It was quick, but so what? They were in their forties. They were beyond the age of uncertainty when it came to knowing what they wanted.

As soon as he was physically able, she would tell him what she decided, but not before he was moving around on his own. The last thing she wanted was Rex to hurt himself more because he tried to fuck her brains out while injured.

And he would.

With a content smile on her face, she rested her head on the back of the chair and closed her eyes.
