“You… killed them?” He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying not to get upset with her. “Why in the… Why would you put yourself in danger like that, Doc? The Howlers could handle it.”

“Because you’re mine,” she bit out, and her gaze shot to him, stubbornness and determination in those blue depths. “Vengeance was mine to take. I didn’t need the Howlers’ assistance to do that.”

That confused him more. “Why didn’t you need the assistance of the Howlers?”

She didn’t answer him right away, but when she did, she admitted, “All I can tell you is I was part of agovernment-trainedunit that thegovernmentwon’t recognize, and we did things for thegovernmentthat they will not claim. That’s all I can tell you.”

Rex stared at her for a long time, those ice-blue eyes looking contemplative. “So… professional badass? Got it.”

“I had the skills to complete the job, so I did.” She sighed. “I needed to do it myself.”

“Because I’m yours.” He watched her give a nod. “Does that mean what I think it means, Doc?”

Her eyes were filled with heat when she answered, “I’ll let you know once you’re able to walk yourself to the bathroom without assistance.”

“I’ll do it right now,” he said and went to move off the bed.

After grabbing his wrist to stop him, she added, “Withoutinjuring yourself more.”

Rex chuckled as he settled into the mattress. “Yes, Ma’am.”

Doc

Doc was in the middle of giving Rex a much-needed sponge bath when the door flew open and a gorgeous young woman stormed into the room.

“Dad, I—Oh, shit!” She immediately stopped, turned around, and walked right back out the door. The young woman was obviously Nevaeh, Rex’s daughter, judging by the use of the wordDad.

Rex chuckled as he continued to lie naked on the bed. “She just saw a whole lot more than she wanted to see.”

“Trauma,” Doc replied, and set the rag in the bowl of warm water on the side table. Deciding he was clean enough, at least all the blood was gone, she set about re-wrapping his wounds. When she was done, she covered him with a sheet from the waist down and headed out to the hallway.

The raven-haired woman was pacing back and forth in front of her father’s door. Wearing a black Howlers MC tank that was short enough to show off a good portion of her midriff, an unbuttoned black and green flannel, and a pair of black leather pants, she went back and forth on her sky-high heels, muttering, “I didnotjust see my dad naked. I didnotjust see my dad naked. I didnotjust see my dad naked.”

Doc smiled as she crossed her arms over her chest and said, “I’m sorry you just saw your dad naked. He needed to be cleaned up, but he can’t take a shower yet.”

Ice-blue eyes that were very much like her father’s lifted as Nevaeh looked Doc’s way. “What… How… Uncle Top said he was hurt.”

Nodding, Doc told her, “He was stabbed several times, but he’s okay. He just needs to heal.”

“When did this happen?”

“Last night.”

Nevaeh’s brows pulled together. “Why isn’t he healing? He should be walking around, at least.”

After thinking on it for a moment, Doc decided Nevaeh was old enough to have the truth. If that was the wrong decision, she would argue with Rex about it later. “Do you know about the shifter blocker?”

Nevaeh nodded. “Aunt Crush was injected with it months ago.”

“Before all the injuries happened, he had been injected with the drug. Apparently, it disables shifter healing for a couple of days. He’s still healing. It’s just taking a bit longer.”

“Are you… a doctor?”

Doc chuckled. “I’m a vet.”

Nevaeh’s eyes widened, before she blurted, “You’re dad’s mate!” Then the young woman was clapping and jumping up and down, which Doc thought was dangerous considering the heels she was wearing. “I’m so happy to meet you!”

“Nice to meet you, too,” Doc replied, right before she was yanked into the arms of Nevaeh and squeezed tight, obviously happy for her father.
