She nodded.
“Okay. We can go to the courthouse.” He pulled his phone from his pocket. “I could have us in this afternoon. Just need to call the clerk to arrange it. Unless you want a big wedding? I’m cool with that too, but ASAP.”
Doc grinned. “I’m good with the courthouse.”
“Today?”
“Whenever.”
Then she was sitting on the island next to his plate, and he was kissing the hell out of her. When he pulled back, he whispered, “I love you, Doc.”
“Love you, too, Fido.”
He refused to let her off the island, insisting he wanted her close as he hand-fed her the lunch he prepared.
Rex
A few hours later, after making calls and pulling strings, Rex and Doc went to the courthouse. He fully expected to have a moment where the old him tried to change his mind because of fear. Six months ago, he never would have believed that he’d be marrying anyone ever, but that voice never entered his brain. That old Rex was dead and buried. Doc’s Rex was the one running the show, and he was all about committing to his woman.
The smile on Doc’s face when he said the words,I do,filled his heart with more joy than he had ever felt in his life. He already knew they were meant to be together, but it made him feel complete when he made her happy, as cheesy as that sounded.
Looking down at the marriage license after the ceremony in the courthouse, he saw where Doc had signedJolene Penelope Hendricksonand grinned. Almost giddy, Rex put the pen tip to the paper and signed on the line —Terrence Lee Piccolo-Henderickson.
“You’re hyphenating?” she asked at his side.
He shrugged. “I know why you want to keep your last name, and I get it. You’re Dr. Hendrickson. But I want us to have the same last name, but I also like having the same last name as my daughter, so… hyphenated.”
Doc reached up and hooked a hand on the back of his neck. After pulling him down to her, she pressed a kiss to his lips.
When she pulled back a bit, Rex asked, “Are we getting mushy? I feel like we’re getting mushy.”
Doc chuckled and rolled her eyes. “You’regetting mushy. I’m just being a girl.”
After finishing their business with the county clerk, Rex slid his arm around Doc’s shoulder and led her out of the courthouse with a grin on his face. Once they were in his truck, he pulled his phone out and sent Nevaeh a text.
REX : Staying at Doc’s tonight. Need you to take care of the dogs at our place. Keep it quiet for now, but you have a stepmom now.
NEVAEH : Duh. You just have to mate her.
REX : About to go do that, but I married her first.
He swore he heard her scream of joy from across town.
Thirty-Five
Doc
Rexhadinsistedoncarrying her over the threshold, and while she rolled her eyes and gave him shit for it, she really thought it was sweet. He was like a kid in a candy store. As he carried her down the hall to her bedroom, he talked about taking her to get rings, because he wanted her ring on his finger, and if she was okay with it, he wanted her to have his on hers. It was adorable the way he rambled on.
For the entirety of her adult life, she couldn’t picture herself married to anyone. She always found something about a man that kept her from ever even coming close to taking that step. With Rex, everything she learned about him pushed her in that direction. Every piece of information about him brought more confirmation that she wanted him as her future.
And now he was. Terrence “Rex” Piccolo-Hendrickson was her husband, her future, her everything.
Deep, strong emotion for him flooded her body — Pride, appreciation, joy, and love took over. She wanted to repay him for everything he had brought to her life, give him a reward, or a present.
After he set her on her feet at the foot of her bed, she cleared her throat and looked up at him. “In honor of our wedding, I… I’m going to let you be in charge tonight.”
His face softened, and he lifted a hand to run the back of his knuckles down her cheek. “Doc, that’s very sweet. I appreciate what you’re doing here, but… I want our wedding night to reflect our marriage, and I married my Domme.”
