“She took a bullet to her left side. Ranger was packing the wound and bringing her to the cabin. I don’t know much more than she was losing a lot of blood.” His voice dropped to a softer tone. “I’m worried about Trick. That bullet was meant for him. She jumped in front of him.”

It was Gorgeous who spoke up. “She’s going to be okay, right, Skull? Please tell me she’ll be okay.”

There was a deep sigh on the other end of the line. “If Ranger has any say in it, she’ll be just fine.”

“We’re leaving now. Send me the address of where they are.” Axle ended the call, took another bite of pizza before he stood and gathered what he needed from his office. “I need Pike and Crush.”

“I’ll get them,” Ginger said before leaving the office.

“You can’t ride alone. Who are you taking with you?” The tone of Gorgeous’s voice reminded him, once again, of why she was his woman. That wasn’t a suggestion. It was a demand.

“I’ll take Siren and Zero. I need you and Nugget to stay here, okay?” He put his hands to her baby bump as he lowered his head and rested his forehead against hers. In a whisper, he said, “Protect my babies.” He kissed her lips. “And protect my heart.”

“Always.”

Trick

Standing at the foot of the bed, Trick watched as Ranger and a man he had never met worked on Stiletto. He didn’t know much about what was going on, but there was a lot of blood and a flurry of activity. He heard things like liver, kidney, and colon thrown around, and there was a brief but vehement argument about taking her to the hospital, but all of it was done as the two men worked.

His bear was silent, but Trick was pretty sure it was because both of them were in shock. His mind just kept replaying the sight of her jumping in front of him before hitting the ground. That bullet had his name on it. He should have taken that hit. If she died, it would be his fault.

That thought stopped the breath from moving in his lungs. She couldn’t die. She just couldn’t. He’d just found her. They had only begun learning each other and growing their relationship. He wanted a future with her, a life, a family. He would have none of that if she died, because he would go with her.

“You’re bleeding.”

Trick heard someone speaking, but he didn’t care who it was.

“Trick.”

Fuck you. My mate is dying in that bed.

His view of Stiletto was interrupted when someone stepped in front of him. Instantly, his eyes began to glow, and a deep growl rolled up his chest and out of his mouth.

“Stand down,” Skull said using an alpha voice, and since he was the highest-ranking Howler in attendance, Trick took notice.

Instinctually, his anger dimmed slightly, and he blinked. When his eyes focused, he was looking at Skull, and his vice president was wearing a worried expression.

“You’re bleeding,” the man said and lifted his hands slowly before he reached for Trick’s shoulder. He didn’t move as Skull took hold of the sleeve of his sweatshirt and yanked. There was a metallic ding and the sound of something rolling along the floor. He didn’t care enough to look at what it was. With the sleeve gone, his VP examined his shoulder and sighed. “Looks like your body already pushed out the bullet. Not much to do, now. We’ll just bandage it up.”

“Fuck my shoulder,” Trick replied, and moved to where he could see Stiletto again. He didn’t feel any pain, not from his shoulder. The only thing he felt was a deep gloom that had settled in his chest, a weight that got heavier with each passing second that his mate was bleeding.

“Trick,” Skull protested, but he was interrupted by Ranger.

“We’ve got her as stable as we can here. We need to get her to a hospital.”

The doctor that Ranger had called in nodded and straightened. “Now. I have to get in there and repair some lacerations to the liver and the kidney, repair damage to the colon, and assess for any other damage.”

Trick started nodding halfway through the doctor’s explanation. “Yeah. Yes. Whatever she needs. Just save her.”

The doctor gave a nod, removed the blood-covered gloves, went to the kitchen, washed his hands quickly, and began tapping on his phone. When he was done, he put the phone to his ear and rattled off the address. “Ambulance STAT. GSW.”

As the doctor continued to relay information to someone on the other end of the line, Trick made his way up to Stiletto’s side, deliberately not looking at her injury. If he did, he wasn’t sure he could hold himself together, and she needed him to be strong.

Bending down, he put his mouth by her ear. “I’m so sorry, Stiletto. Hang on, baby. I need you. Don’t leave me. I love you.”
