Page 43 of Never Letting Go

Maybe Damon was wrong about the guy being on Grayson’s side. “The death is real this time, and Javier seems really broken about it.”

“He’s probably just upset because everyone suspects him.”

“Of killing his best friend?”

“They have a love-hate relationship. Always have. If Mateo pissed him off, I wouldn’t put anything past him.”

“Even murder?” Damon exclaimed.

“Somebodykilled him, and those two have had some serious fistfights over the years. One of them ended up in the hospital when they were in high school.”

Damon started to say something, but Grayson stumbled into the room. His hair stuck out in several directions, and he looked around as if he’d never seen the ballroom before. Damon hurried over to him. “Are you okay?”

“Where’s Rita?”

“Hopefully with Ariana. Did you hear that we found Alonzo?”

“Alonzo’s safe?” He leaned against the nearest table. “Did you see him?”

“Yes, and Ariana took him here personally. Since neither of them is here, I assume she found someone to take him to his room.”

Grayson looked around, his eyes wide. “My dad isn’t in here either. Hopefully they’re all in their room. I’ll head there now.”

“Grayson!” someone called from across the room.

He turned in the direction of his name.

Damon followed his gaze to the same guy he’d just been talking to before Grayson came back.

“Mateo really looked up to you. Now he’s dead!”

“Are you accusing me of something, Trey?”

“He’d still be alive if he weren’t here — for your second wedding. It seems fishy!”

“Fishy? I don’t know who the killer is. Do you? Because I for one would doanythingfor family, and that includes you. And it definitely includes Mateo.”

“Then how’d he end up dead?”

Damon started to say something, but somebody beat him to it.

Another relative stood between them. “Stop! It won’t do anyone good if we turn on each other.”

“Mateo’s dead,” Trey snapped. “Turning on each other is the least of our problems.”

“Except that someone here killed him. We all need to work together to figure out who that is — before they strike again.”

“If we all work together, then we’ll be working with the murderer. Did you think of that?”

“Enough!” Damon said. “The police are on the way, andtheywill figure out who the culprit is. We need to be supporting Grayson, not accusing him.”

Grayson whispered a thanks.

Damon grabbed a chair. “Let’s circle up. Everyone can say what they think. We’ll make more progress if we work together.”

Trey rolled his eyes. “Like I said, if the murderer is in here, it won’t do any good.” He stormed from the room.

“Is he always like that?” Damon asked.
