“Or before,” Javier muttered.

“I wasn’t behind that!” Grayson said. “Do you happen to remember me cutting the tape and helping you down? Was that all for nothing?”

Trey looked away and sniffled.

Grayson turned to Javier and loosened his grip on Trey. “Why would you tell him that was my idea?”

Javier shrugged. “Guess I remembered it wrong.”

“You think?” Grayson let go of Trey completely and stared down Javier. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Me? Nothing, other than my best friend being murdered before my eyes.”

“Before youreyes?” Grayson yelled. “You saw it? And you didn’t tell anyone?”

“Does it matter?”

“Of course it does!”

Trey slinked down to the floor, shaking, sobbing. When he looked up, fear was in his bloodshot eyes and snot ran from his nose.

The guy was clearly no killer.

Damon went over to him and rested a hand on his shoulder while Grayson and Javier continued arguing.

Grayson grabbed Javier’s shirt. “Who killed him? They might have Emerson and Rita’s grandma!”

“I didn’t see much. The hall was dark, and I was trying to stay out of sight. I didn’t even know it was Mateo until the killer left, or I’d have defended him.”

“Why didn’t you jump in, anyway? Only Mateo’s life mattered?” Grayson punched him so hard, he flew back then slumped to the floor.

Javi scrambled to his feet. “You’re going to regret that!”

“Really?”

Javier sneered at him. “You think you’re the only one who’s experienced a loss tonight? Wake up! The world doesn’t revolve around you just because you’re famous.”

Grayson stared at him and blinked a few times. “What’s wrong with you? I’d throw you out, but we’re stuck here. Rest assured, you’re relieved of your groomsman duties.”

“Good. I wouldn’t stand up there with you if you paid me.” Javier stormed away.

Damon exchanged a look with Ariana.

Now they were back to square one, and morning was rapidly approaching.

They split into groups of two and three, then everyone went in separate directions.

Ariana gripped his hand almost hard enough to cause damage.

He turned to her. “Do you want to sit this one out?”

“Not a chance.” She loosened her hold.

Behind them, someone screamed.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Rita stepped away from the window. It seemed like the storm was never going to let up. Not anytime soon, at least. It raged with the same level of anger since it began, almost like the killer and it were in sync. If the squall let up, maybe the murderer would too. Or if he stopped, maybe the thunder and lightning would.
