She nods miserably as the waiter appears to clear the starter and refill our glasses and the musicians play on as if nothing happened.

She gazes around her and says wistfully, “It’s beautiful out here.”

“It is.”

“You are very lucky.”

“You make your own luck, princess, and I make a lot of it.”

I drum my fingers on the table and say wickedly, “If I help you, I want something from you in return.”

“What?” Her attention shifts back to me, and I salivate over the alarm on her face.

“Seven days and seven nights.”

“I don’t understand.”

I lean forward and stare into her eyes, loving how terrified she is as she gazes back at me.

“You will be mine for seven days and seven nights. On the seventh night, I will return you to your life. Debt paid, never to be repeated.”

“I’m sorry.” She shakes her head and stutters. “You will really have to spell it out for me because I haven’t got a clue what you are talking about.”

“I think you know exactly what I’m talking about, Allegra. You just don’t believe I’m asking.”

The blood drains from her face and she whispers, “I’m not a whore.”

“I disagree.”

I laugh softly at the furious expression on her face.

“You already proved you were when you attempted to pay your brother’s debt. You may not have offered sex, but you offered money.”

“I was being blackmailed, you fucking bastard.” She says through gritted teeth.

“Then why didn’t you go to the cops if you are so certain your brother is innocent?”

“Because…”

She falters and slumps in her seat. “Because he begged me not to. He told me his career would be over if there was a whiff of scandal attached to his name, let alone murder.”

“And he used you to save his own skin.” I hiss, wishing I had one hour with her fucking brother.

“He didn’t know. Not at first.”

“I thought he was being blackmailed.”

I’m surprised at the tears that spill as she says with a sob. “It’s not just Rafferty. I’ve been getting calls, notes and I’m sure I’m being followed.”

This is news to me, and I growl, “Perhaps you should start at the beginning princess because you are in deeper than I thought.”

She glances up and I detect a faint spark of hope in her eyes before she shakes it away and takes a deep breath.

“I’m probably being silly. I can deal with it. It’s not so bad.”

She lifts her glass and attempts to smile. “What’s taking that main course so long?”

I click my fingers without tearing my eyes from her for a second and as the waiter serves two plates of filet mignon, I allow her the distraction to get her shit together. If anything, her confession has only made her more attractive to me. I love shit like this, and she will soon learn that I always get my man and woman. It’s only a matter of time.
