“But he didn’t pay up, River.” I lean forward.

“He sent his sister. Why would he do that?”

He shrugs. “Doesn’t want the spotlight on him to fall away. He’s a big assed star now and can’t afford to be seen in the underworld, so he got his sister to bail him out. Why the fuck do I care as long as I get my money and his blackmailer has his fun?”

“I want a name.”

I state the facts and River shakes his head. “I could ask Michelle. Increase the pressure on her and get the information.”

He sounds almost hopeful and yet we both know there is no way he is leaving this office alive because I leave no loose ends and this fucker is looser than most.

Once again, my gaze flicks to the screen and I notice the two girls move to the dance floor. Allegra is laughing at something her friend says, and the lights dance in the highlights of her hair. Her dress is short and heading up her thighs, offering me a glimpse of tantalizing flesh that would look good wrapped around my body.

I am wasting time, so I nod to Kyle who empties a bullet into River’s head before he even sees it coming and as he falls to the floor, I congratulate myself on my choice of flooring as any trace of him will be gone before I return.

I stand and say to Kyle, “Call the guys and have him removed — every single fucking trace.”

He makes the call as I reach for my jacket, shrugging into it while staring at the screen.

Yes, I’m coming for you, Allegra Powell. Prepare to be destroyed.

CHAPTER3

ALLEGRA

This place is insane. Cessy is insane and I’m really beginning to believe I am insane to venture out at all. Despite an extreme show of bravado, I am quaking inside. Every person who glances in my direction is probably hiding an ulterior motive. I’m jumpy, anxious and wishing I wasn’t here. However, there is no derailing Cessy from having a good time and as we take our seats in the VIP room, she stares at me with excited anticipation and giggles. “This is called living the dream.”

“If you say so.” I’m dismissive because this is currently my worst nightmare, and she stares at me long and hard and says with determination, “Okay. Spill.”

“What?” I feign ignorance and she leans closer and whispers, “Something happened. You’ve been avoiding my calls for the past two weeks and now, when I hunt you down, you’re scared of your own shadow.”

I shrug. “Nerves I guess.”

“What have you got to be nervous about?” She says incredulously and I sigh heavily. “If you must know, I’m worried about the internship. I will probably suck and my career will be over before it’s begun.”

“Really.” She stares at me with a hint of anger. “Are you seriously telling me you’re nervous?” She shakes her head. “For God’s sake, Ally, you are the most ‘I’ve got this shit’ girl I know. It’s why we’re friends, because I’m one too.” She grins. “We are the queens, remember, and queens don’t have nerves. They create them in others.”

As always, she lifts my mood and then she stops and stares in disbelief as a waiter hovers nearby with a bucket containing a bottle of champagne and two glasses.

“What’s this?” Cessy says, her eyes wide and the waiter smiles. “Compliments of Gyration.”

“Are you frigging kidding me?” Cessy’s cool explodes in one excited sentence, and I roll my eyes as the waiter grins. “Enjoy, ladies.”

We stare at one another in shock as the waiter moves away and Cessy dives on the bottle and I almost believe she will forego the glass.

I watch as she fills two glasses and hands one to me with a grin of pure pleasure.

“Happy birthday, Ally. May all your dreams come true.”

“They already have, ladies.”

I look up and note two men hovering nearby and before we can speak, they drop down onto the couch opposite and raise their own glasses of champagne.

“Happy birthday.” They say and I catch Cessy’s expression and try not to laugh.

“Brad and Julian at your service.” One of them says, leaning forward and staring blatantly into my eyes. “I haven’t seen you here before.”

Cessy smirks as I smile politely. “It’s our first time.”
