“When?” I’m so nervous and he shrugs.

“Right on time. Currently, Heather is making her way into the alley and dropping the bag.”

“Heather! The cop?”

I experience a sense of relief that tells me what a bad person I am, being happy that someone else is putting themselves in danger on my behalf.

Shade adds. “She’ll do what they asked and the cops will be watching.”

“I don’t understand.”

I’m missing some vital information here and he raises my hand to his lips, kissing it softly, before saying, “I called the cops to deal with your problem.”

“Isn’t that against the code?” I say in disbelief, and he chuckles softly. “The code? I’m not a pirate, princess.”

“Well, mafia law then. I didn’t think you call the cops on anything.”

“Ordinarily, no. We don’t. But this concerns you, and I’m not taking any chances.”

“You did it for me.” I stare at him in shock.

Tears fill my eyes as I realize what he’s done for me and he grips my hand, saying softly, “I will doanythingfor you, Ally. You are the most important person in my world, and I hate seeing you afraid. I could have dealt with it, but it would have had risks attached. Heather was already involved and so I decided to do things the right way for once. We should get a call anytime soon and see what they found.”

“I can’t believe it.” I shake my head, a surge of love filling my heart as I gaze at the man who surprises me over and over again.

“I will do anything to protect you, princess. I may be a fucked up killer, but I will always do right by you.”

This is the sweetest thing he’s ever said to me and means so much. I drop his hand and head to his side of the table, planting myself in his lap and kissing him so fiercely my lips burn. It becomes the most important thing in my life right now to show him how much he means to me, and only the sound of his phone ringing makes us pull apart.

“Is that them?” I ask, my eyes wide, and he reaches for his phone and nods.

“It is.”

I stay where I am, his arm around my waist while he answers the call.

“Heather.”

He puts the call on speaker, and I listen to what she says.

“The money was delivered as arranged and the surveillance was tight. I walked into the alley with no disruptions and left just as easily. I made it out to the street and then I noticed two people heading my way. I don’t know why, but they looked like trouble, so I turned and walked the other way. They followed me and I dodged into a nearby store, sure I’d lose them in there. I managed to get a photograph of them and sent it to the department. When I hid in the lingerie department, I received the ID. Does the name Constantine ring any bells because apparently, they’re brothers?”

“Dimitri Constantine.” He growls into the phone.

“They are his sons. Apollo and Adonis. Hit men for the Constantine mafia, enforcers if you like.”

“What are they doing in New York?” Heather is breathless and Shade says quickly, “Where are you?”

“I’m still in the fucking lingerie changing rooms. Until I know they’re taken care of, I’m staying in here all night.”

“I’ll send some guards. They’ll get you safely out of there. Code word, princess.” He winks at me, and I stare back, my eyes wide because in this moment Heather is pretending to me and I feel so guilty that she is in danger.

“Tell me what the cops find. Who lifts the money and what they’re going to do about that?” He growls into the phone and says abruptly, “Stay where you are. I’m on it.”

As he cuts the call, he types out a text to Kyle and sighs heavily.

“The Constantine’s are trouble for us. They are here for a reason, and I don’t like it.”

“You know them?”
