I held my breath.

“I think one of these days I just might,” she murmured.

It took me a few seconds to gather my thoughts and find my voice. “Whenever and wherever.”

She smiled, lifting her attention to my eyes again. “I like talking with you.”

“I like you too—talking.” The fuck was wrong with me?

Jasmine shook my foundation, riled me up in ways no other woman had done.

One corner of her lips rose as though she was aware of my…discomfort. She seemed to like it too.

“Come on—back to work we go,” I muttered, wrapping up the rest of my sub.

We headed out to my car without another word, and I opened her door. She went to step around me, and her elbow bumped against mine. Her gaze jerked up to my face, but I held still.

A wobbly smile, a hint of surprise and pleasure in her pale eyes sent an ache through my chest.

“Okay?” I rasped the word, more shaken than I’d ever been by the mere brush of arms.

Jasmine hesitated a second before answering, her smile growing brighter. “Yes. I am.”

I grinned. “Glad to hear it. Now get your fine ass in my car so we can head back to work.”

She squeaked and slid onto the passenger seat.

I slammed the door and walked around the front of my car, realizing what I’d said. “Fuck,” I muttered to myself.Get ahold of yourself, Fox.

Jasmine sat prim and proper as I started up the car and pulled out of the deli’s parking lot. “So. That just happened.”

I glanced over to find her face still flushed.

“Sorry. My comment was totally inappropriate.”

“But true?”

Her gaze bored into me.Shit. Clearing my throat, I faced forward, watching where I drove. “In my opinion, yes.”

“Well, then.” She sounded entirely too pleased by my answer.

My hand rested on the stick shift, fingers itching to reach for her thigh. Jaw clenched, I kept my focus on the road.

A flicker light as a feather ghosted over my knuckles.

I glanced down to find Jasmine pulling her hand back from mine. She smiled—appeared so damn pleased with herself I didn’t even bother asking if she was all right.

“So, that just happened,” I echoed her words from moments earlier.

“Yes.” She owned the word. “Yes, it did.”

We both grinned all the way back to the office.

Two hours later, I couldn’t find a file in my desk. “Jasmine!” I called through my open office door. “Do you know where those applications that came in last week are?”

I still hunted for a sadist to match with the widow.

Jasmine appeared in my doorway, catching my breath as always. She held what I’d been looking for.
