My insides bled at the thought of hurting her.

Standing, I swayed a little as the beer finally caught up with me, making everything a little hazy. Balling my hands, and forcing the world to stay upright, I marched after her and banged on the bathroom door. “Neri. Let me in.”

“Go away.”

“Talk to me.”

“I’m done with talking, Aslan. Just like you, remember? You can’t even talk about your family, and they’ve been dead almost six years!”

A chill poured through me. “That’s different—”

“No, it’s not. You’re a damn hypocrite.”

I winced, hating that she called me out on it. “Fine, I admit it. I’m a hypocrite. But I’m only trying to keep you from doing what I do. You can’t keep burying this, askim.”

“I’m not planning on burying it.” A strange noise came from the other side of the door. “I’m dealing with it in another way.”

The chill inside me solidified into frost. “What are you doing in there? Open the damn door.” Jiggling the handle, I yanked and jerked. “Unlock it and let me in. If you’re struggling, then let me help. I’ll give you what you want. Quickly. We can be together before your parents get home.”

“Go away.”

Another noise.

A quiet moan.

“Nerida! Open the fucking door.”

She didn’t answer.

She hissed as something crashed inside the bathroom.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Fixing myself,” she shouted. “You should probably learn how to do the same thing.”

I saw red.

I pummelled my fist against the door. “If you don’t open in three seconds, I’m gonna break it down. I’m going to bend you over my knee and—”

“Aslan?” Jack appeared at the top of the corridor. “Everything okay?”

Fuck.

FUCK.

Trembling hard, I dragged my hand over my mouth and did my best to swallow down the panic Neri had given me. “Yeah...yeah, everything’s fine.”

“Why were you yelling?”

“I, eh...too much to drink.”

“Fair enough. No more until you’ve eaten a big meal to soak it up, alright?”

“Yep. No worries.”

His eyes flickered past me to the locked bathroom door. “Neri okay?”

“I’m fine, Dad!” Neri yelled. “Just taking a bath.”
