“NERI!”

I went to charge after her, but sharp fingernails wrapped around my wrist, keeping me pinned. “Let her go, Aslan. She’s just being silly.”

“Let me the fuck go,” I snarled, yanking my hand.

Rita didn’t obey, pouting unattractively. “I have no idea why she’s acting like a two-year-old. I saw her smiling when Joel kissed her before.”

“What?”

“You know...when she snuck off to get some fresh water? He went too. She knows Joel wants to fuck her. That’s why we figured we’d take you to the beach. That way she can use your tent.”

My heart stopped.

I couldn’t speak.

Rage flowed out of me, making my entire body quake.

Molly cleared her throat. “Eh, what Rita means to say is Neri and Joel have been flirting for weeks. She agreed to come with us because she knew—”

“That Joel wants to fuck his little sister’s best friend?” I snarled.

Rita giggled. “Well, when you say it like that—”

“He’s not going to lay a single finger on Neri.”

Molly narrowed her eyes. “Why? You jealous or something?”

I saw red.

Literal blood-red dripped over my vision.

Snatching my wrist out of Rita’s talons, I bared my teeth. “I’m responsible for her well-being. To keep her safe from everything—including horny fucking bastards who think they can get lucky with a damn child.”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake.” Rita threw up her hands. “She’s not a kid. She’s fifteen. I lost my V-card when I was her age. I gave my first blowie at fourteen—”

“Nerida is not you,” I hissed.

“Oh, please. All girls at that age are like me. We want. We hunger. We ache.” She pressed her hand over my out-of-control heart. “You can’t stop her from growing up and—”

“Watch me.” Shoving her away, I broke into a run.

My bare feet flew over fallen leaves and twigs, kicking up plumes of sand. “Nerida!”

“What the hell is his problem?” Rita’s annoyance chased me as I bolted past the two posts announcing the trail to Noah Beach. Signs dotted the entrance with pictures of crocodiles and other dangerous creatures.

I didn’t stop to care.

“Neri. Get your ass back here!”

No response.

No sound of her running up ahead.

The night swallowed me completely as I balled my hands and raced faster.

The path seemed to go on for miles, an endless tunnel of darkness and claustrophobic trees before it finally spat me out on the most stunning beach I’d ever seen.

I didn’t stop to gawk.
