When I came out a few minutes later, fully dressed, he was also fully dressed. I was simultaneously disappointed and relieved.

He handed me a cup of coffee before gesturing to a container of cream on the counter. “Not sure how you like it.” He took a swallow from his own mug.

I needed my coffee plain and strong this morning. I took several swallows, bracing myself to face him and somehow manage a conversation before I escaped across the hallway.

When he finally turned to look at me, I said, “Um…”

Great. I was off to a brilliant start.

After a moment, he prompted, “Yes?”

ChapterTwenty-One

COOPER

Farrah blinked and took a gulp of coffee. After she lowered her mug, she gripped it tightly. “We don’t have to make last night a thing.”

I studied her for a beat before nodding in agreement. “We don’t.”

I’d spent the approximately twenty-five minutes since I had woken with her naked body draped against mine, telling myself this was no different from any casual night. No different at all.

I studiously ignored the corner of my mind that pointed out that I’d never experienced the intensity I felt with Farrah. Whenever that voice chimed in, my rational, cynical mind would counter it.You don’t even know what that means. It’s just sex. Really fucking good sex.

“We’re friends,” I added. “And if we sometimes enjoy some benefits, that’s okay.”

“It’s convenient,” she chimed in, nodding vigorously.

I was both relieved and disappointed at how quickly she agreed with me. Just then, Humpty twined around her ankles, purring up a storm.

After leaning down to pet him, she straightened. “All your windows are closed, right?”

“I already double-checked. Don’t worry.”

Farrah collected her keys and purse minutes later, and I walked her to the door. She paused, looking up at me. The draw to kiss her was so strong, it ran roughshod over any restraint I had. The next thing I knew, I nudged her chin up with my knuckles and leaned down to give her a lingering kiss.

It was just a kiss, just a brush of my lips over hers, just a moment more to dally. I savored the brief taste of her. When I lifted my head and stared into her eyes for several beats of my heart, she looked startled. She blinked, and I could’ve sworn she almost shook her head.

I forced myself to step back, and then she was gone, calling over her shoulder, “See you later!”

I didn’t even notice closing the door, but I leaned against it, needing the support. My head fell back, and I took a deep breath. “What the fuck am I doing?”

“Dude, you’re already married,” Wes said as he chuckled.

Jonah rolled his eyes. “I didn’t want to wait.”

“Not to be nosy—” I began.

Just as Beck interjected, “But you are being nosy.”

I slid my gaze to his. “I learned from the master… You,” I deadpanned. Beck burst out laughing while Jonah chuckled. “Back to my question. Why did you get married so fast?”

Jonah had recently married Alice, after starting to date her just this past summer.

He angled his head to the side, his gaze sobering. “Well, I love her, so that part’s easy. But have you met my grandmother?”

“I think so. Maybe at Firehouse Café?”
