I tried to force a smile. “Hey. Come on in.”

Oliver stepped into the room and looked around, dropping his bag near the bed. “I can’t believe that it’s only been a few days since I was here for the first time.”

Changing the subject entirely, I cleared my throat. “I ordered dinner.”

“Thanks.” We stood there watching each other, me with my hands stuffed in my pockets, for what felt like an awkward eternity. Oliver broke the tension by stepping in close to me and placing a gentle kiss to my lips.

“I’m glad you’re here,” I said, barely a whisper.

“I’m glad to be here.”

Another knock at the door startled me out of the moment. “That’s room service.” I went to the door and accepted the trays of food. I hadn’t ordered anything too fancy, just a couple of sandwiches and two orders of fries. We ate our food in near-silence and when we were done, Oliver looked at me expectantly.

“What now?”

“I’m tired. I think I just want to watch this movie and go to sleep, if that’s okay.” I didn’t know how else to say I wasn’t in the mood for goodbye sex.

“Whatever you want.”

We slid under the covers and Oliver held me close with my head on his chest while we watched the rest of the rom-com I’d started before he’d arrived. I listened to his deep, even breathing and the thump-thump of his heart rather than paying much attention to the movie I’d seen what felt like a thousand times before. I fell asleep to those sounds, wishing I could capture the moment forever.

The blaring alarm on my phone woke me the next morning, wrenching me out of a dream and into reality. In the dream, Oliver had been cooking me breakfast in my—no,our—home in Port Grandlin. It had been warm and comforting against the stark reality I faced when I woke. Oliver’s strong, muscular arms were still wrapped around me and he groaned as I slipped out of his grasp to turn off the alarm.

“Is it morning already?” He couldn’t have been more adorable, with his rumpled clothes and messy hair, as he stretched and yawned.

“Unfortunately, it is.”

“What time is your flight?”

I scratched the back of my neck while I tried to remember our exact departure time. “We leave around eleven.”

He nodded slowly, biting his lower lip briefly. “Do you want me to order breakfast? We could take a shower while we wait.”

It only took me a moment to respond truthfully. “That sounds perfect.”

Under the warm spray of the shower head, Oliver pulled me close to his body, our slick skin touching from chest to stomach. He cradled the back of my head with one hand while I wrapped my arms around his waist and we kissed slow and deep. There was nothing sexual about it, no frantic touches or desperate, needy moans. I poured myself into the kiss and accepted all he had to give, wishing it was enough. Hoping that it wasn’t goodbye.

Too soon, I was finishing up my packing, breakfast plates empty and forgotten on the desk. “I’m really going to miss Vegas,” I said, folding the last of my clothes into my suitcase.

“It’s a special place, that’s for sure. You sure you don’t mind me sticking around in this room for a little while?”

I shook my head. “Take all the time you need. Well, until checkout time.”

A moment later, I heard voices in the hallway calling my name. “Cam! Cameron Newton, get your ass out here!” A fist beat a rhythm on my door and when I swung it open, I found Parker and Jared waiting expectantly for me.

Parker had his suitcase in hand and a backpack slung over his shoulder. “The cars are—oh. Sorry to interrupt. He’s hot.” The last sentence was said in Jared’s direction.

I turned to find Oliver’s cheeks turning pink as he tried to keep a straight face. “Nice to meet you, too. I’m Oliver.”

“We know who you are,” Jared muttered. I reached out and punched him in the shoulder, and he cleared his throat. “Sorry. I’m Jared, this is Parker. And our ride is here. We’ve gotta go if we’re going to get to the airport on time.”

“Be right down. Give me two minutes. Will you take my bags? I just want to…” I gestured toward Oliver. “Say goodbye.”

Park and Jared grabbed my things and as soon as they were gone, I pulled Oliver into a hug, tears stinging at my eyes. “Thanks for, I don’t know, everything this week. I’m glad…” I choked up and shook my head.

Oliver pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “Things will work out. I hope you know that.”

I nodded, not believing him. “Sure.”
