"So, he still can die?"

"Yes, he can. But let us not think about that, honey. Let's give Nick some time."

"He can't die!" she shouts, and her painful cries fill the room. Everyone has a hard time keeping their emotions in check. Then, to my surprise, someone stumbles through the open door. "Smarty-pants?" Alisha's face is full of color from her bruises, and by the way, she's furrowing her brows, I can tell she's in pain.

"Alisha, what are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in bed resting?" I ask.

"Fuck the doctors," she says, grinding her teeth.

John and Bella chuckle.

"Alisha?" Charlotte whispers between one of her sobs.

"Oh, good Lord." Alisha lets out as she sees Charlotte on the bed. "Smarty-pants. You're safe."

Alisha ignores us and makes her way over to the bed. I have a watery smile on my face when I see how strong the bond between my two best friends and my girl is. They're practically her second moms. Alisha touches the bandage on Charlotte's head.

"I've bumped my head," she says to her aunt. "But I'll be fine." Then she touches Alisha's face. "Who hurt you?"

"A bad man did," she says, and she swallows. "But I'll be okay too. Just like you," and she places a kiss on Charlotte's hand.

My girl nods and looks up at me. "Can I go to Giant, Mommy?"

"No, honey. You still have to rest. What if I go to Nick with Martha and John, and I'll hug him from you? And when the doctor says that you can see him, you and I will visit him together."

She nods with a sad face. "We'll stay with Charlotte," Bella says, pointing to Alisha.

"Thanks, girls." I walk over to the other side of the bed and hug my girl. "I love you, and I'll be back soon."

"Go, Mommy. I think Giant needs you."

I turn, and as we make our way through the long hallways, my scattered brain is still putting all pieces of the puzzle in place. After an elevator ride and two long corridors, we find Brian and Cole standing outside Nick's room. I've never seen these men sad, but now that's all there is to perceive on their faces. Martha hugs both men and places a kiss on their cheeks.

"Come on, boys, let's stay strong. Nick's a fighter."

"How is Charlotte, Emma?" Cole and Brian ask.

I lift my head to look at them both. "She'll be fine. Thanks to Nick. I can't believe that psychopath Cindy did all of this. Have you seen him?" I ask.

"We've already visited him. They say people in a coma can hear you," Cole says. "So, I told him to get his ass back to the mortal world."

"And I told him I would hit on you if he waits too long," Brian says with a sly grin.

I chuckle at his sweet joke.

"You can go in, dear. John and I will wait here for a few minutes," Martha says as she touches my shoulder.

I take a deep breath and enter the room. My breath hitches at the sight of Nick lying in bed. He's hooked to a breathing ventilator, and his chest rises and falls at a steady pace. His eyelids are closed, and there's a bandage around his chest.

"Oh, Nick... I'm so sorry." Standing next to his bed, I touch his chiseled cheek and roam my fingers through his messy caramel-brown locks. "God, please," I say, as I sob. "Please, come back to me. I need you." My eyes drift over his unresponsive large frame and the ventilator. Once again, fear finds me. It speaks to me in its cackling voice. It tells my legs to go weak, my stomach to lurch, and my heart to ache. God, the fear of losing him is heart-shattering. I can't… I sit next to him on a chair, taking his large hand in mine. "You found and saved her, Nick. She's okay.” I place a kiss on his hand. "So it's time for you to heal and wake up. Remember what you told me." My teardrops fall onto our joint hands as I bend and whisper. "You said nothing would tear us apart. So please… please come back to us."
