"What's the matter?"

She grinds her teeth, straightens her spine, and walks further.

"Hey guys,” I say as we're near them.

Cole, who's with his back towards us, turns around and says hi. He inhales a sharp breath, and his mouth drops when his gaze lands on Alisha's bruised face.

"Better close that mouth of yours, grumpy, or you'll catch an infection."

Brian chuckles before turning serious. "God, what happened to you?"

Alisha runs her hands through her long, honey-blonde hair. "You haven't told them?" she asks, staring at Amanda, who answers by shaking her head.

Alisha shrugs and says, "It seems not every man likes a confident woman."

Cole's eyes narrow to crinkled slits, and the knuckles of his fists turn white. He takes a step towards her. "Who did this?"

He's practically standing against her, but to my surprise, Alisha doesn't freak out. Instead, she lifts her chin and looks up at him. Brian, Amanda, and I both stare at the two of them as they hold each other's gaze without saying a word.

"It doesn't matter anymore, grumpy." Alisha says, breaking the silence and their eye contact. Then she shifts her weight and faces me. "I have an appointment in ten minutes. Give Nick my love."

I kiss my dear friend on her cheek. "Okay. Thanks for keeping me company."

She nods. "I'll come by later."

"I'm coming with you," Amanda says, walking over to our blond friend.

Alisha shrugs. "Fine by me."

As they walk away, Cole follows them with hawk eyes until they disappear around the corner.

"When did that happen? Who did that to her?" he asks, still staring into the hallway.

"It happened four days ago," I say as I stand next to him. “Amanda found her beat up in the alley behind the store. She laid there the entire night. She was hypothermic when Amanda found her."

"Jesus Christ," Brian lets out.

"Yeah, you can say that again. She has a bruised kidney." I glance up at Cole, whose eyes are tumultuous. "If everything goes well, she can go home tomorrow," I add, hoping that it will help calm his emotions. I haven't seen this intense side of him much. And to be honest, it mostly happens when he's around Alisha.

"Did she see who did this?" Cole's eyes meet mine, and I tell him what I know.

He lets out a deep, angry grunt when I'm done explaining.

"Cole, man. Are you okay?" Brian asks as he detects the intense energy change in his friend.

Cole's nostrils flare. "I know who attacked her."

Brian and I freeze as we hear him say this.

"Who? What is his name?" we ask simultaneously.

"I don't know his name. But I was there the night he harassed her. It was in Six-Pack. The night we first met. The dickhead kept touching her, and after three times, I intervened and told him to fuck off. And he left." Cole turns his attention to Brian. "Do you think you can go over your security camera footage of that night?"

Brian nods. "Sure. No problem."

"Okay, then let's go." Cole focuses his attention on putting on his jacket. Brian raises his brows as he looks at his best friend, who's getting ready to leave.

"As in, right this moment?" he asks.
