"Come here, cupcake," I say, getting off my chair and holding my arms open. She runs into them as tears stream over her cheeks.
"I-I'm so h-happy," she cries.
Nick gets off the chair and squats next to her. His hand strokes over her hair to her back.
"Hey, Smarty. Look at this."
She turns to Nick, grabs the photo he's holding, and stares at it.
"This," he says, pointing to the little bean, "is your baby brother or sister."
Her eyes enlarge before she places it on my belly and looks up at me. "So this is in here?" she says, holding the ultrasound picture.
I smile and nod. "Yes."
My heart skips a beat when she focuses her attention on my belly and speaks. "Hello, little brother or sister. I'm Charlotte Campbell, your big sister. And I will be the best big sister in the whole wide world. And you'll have the best mommy and daddy in the world."
She throws her hands around my waist and places her cheek against my belly. She then twists her head to Nick. "This is the best birthday present ever.”
Nick's tears break free, and when he opens his arms, Charlotte lets go of me and launches into his arms. She places her little arms around his neck. Nick stands up and spins them around in circles.
I wipe a tear off my cheek while placing my other hand on my belly, seeing this special bond between them. It's unique, and I thank my lucky stars for it every day.
