"So, what is my surprise?"

He blinks his eyes and takes a step back. "This," he says, removing his other arm behind his back and holding up a plate. I let out an amazed gasp seeing the most stunning heart-shaped dark chocolate cake I've ever seen. My eyes get teary when I read the words on top. I love you.

"Oh, Nick. This is gorgeous and sweet. Did you make this?"

"I did, with help. The cake is seventy-five percent pure organic chocolate, with liquid caramel and chocolate filling. So that means healthy chocolate for you and the baby.”

I place the plate on the counter and inhale the scent. “Hmm, so, the inside resembles that of a lava cake?" I ask.

"Yeah, lava is the right word."

"If this tastes the way it smells, I might remove those supervised kitchen visits I put you on."

Nick's booming laugh awakens more butterflies in my stomach.

"Okay, give me a fork," I say, holding up my hand.

Nick chuckles and grabs and places the cutlery in my open hand. He puts himself behind me and as he looks over my shoulder, his warm breath tickles the skin of my neck.

"First, I want to answer this sweet message on top. I love you too, Mister Brown," I say, glancing at him for a brief second.

"Oh, let's take a picture of this before I ruin this masterpiece."

"No, unnecessary, I did that already. Now stick that fork in and open it."

"Why the hurry? This creation is magnificent. It needs admiration."

"Emma! Open the cake."

"Fine, Mister Impatient," I say before sticking my fork into the middle and slicing it open.

"Oh." The sight of the pure silky caramel and chocolate running out in a small sweet stream has me licking my lips. When the velvet stream stops, I press again, and another gush of pure silk-like, smooth chocolate pours out.

"Huh?"

"What?" Nick says beside my ear.

"That," I say, pointing the fork to something floating inside the liquid chocolate. Without waiting, I prick my fork inside, glide it under the object, and lift it.

"What is—" My vocal cords stop producing sounds, and a few incoherent words leave my lips. "Nick… what..." I stare wide-eyed at the content.

Nick chuckles as his fingers take the item off the fork. "This, my sweet Emma, is your actual surprise."

He places his free hand on my shoulder and turns me until I'm facing him. My brain stutters when my eyes take in bare-chested Nick getting down on one knee. Every part of me goes on pause while my thoughts catch up. He takes my hand in his and swallows.

"Emma, I want you to know that I love you like I have loved no woman before. You are always on my mind and in my heart. Before you, I thought I knew what falling in love felt like—but I was wrong. The moment you walked into my life, you showed me the true meaning of unconditional love, Angel. You're the sweetest, kindest, and sexiest woman I've ever met. And you're an exceptional mother. For me, you're simply irresistible."

Tears escape from the corners of my eyes as his words flow into my heart and fill my soul.

"We've proven that nothing can tear us apart. My love for you recognizes no barriers. I will jump hurdles, leap fences, penetrate walls for your love. I'm head over heels in love with you, and it's the best thing I've done, and I'll ever do."

Without breaking eye contact, he places our hands on my belly. "With you, Charlotte, and this little one, my whole life falls in line. You complete me, Angel. I need you as a heart needs a beat. So that's why I have this," he says, holding out the ring covered in chocolate.

"Emma Campbell, I promise you I will love you until the stars go out, and the tides no longer turn. I can see the two of us and the life I hope we'll share when I look into your eyes. I know you're the only one I want to share the rest of my life with. So please, Angel, will you marry me?"

With shaky hands, I gaze into those brown irises that, at this very moment, resemble that of hot chocolate on a chilly winter night. It wraps around you like a blanket; it engulfs you in its warmth, and it makes you feel at home. So I give him my answer.

"Loving you never was an option. It is a necessity. I want you in my life for today, tomorrow, and forever. So my answer is an absolute yes! Yes, Nickolas Brown, I'll marry you."
