"He's here!" Charlotte rushes towards the front door. She's ecstatic.
I walk into the hallway and catch how Charlotte throws the door open. Only wearing socks, she runs onto the porch and launches herself at Nick. He picks her up and swirls her around. A lump forms in my throat, seeing this sweet interaction between them.
"I have a surprise for you."
"For me?" His warm voice echoes through the house.
"Yep, and I made it myself," she states with an immense grin.
"Then let me see it."
Charlotte points towards the kitchen, and he carries her over. As they pass me, Nick stops to whisper in my ear.
"Hello, Emma."
Butterflies shoot through me as his tone of voice affects my body. Every drop of blood rushes between my legs, causing it to throb while my nipples pucker. Our eyes meet, and his lips curl into a brief smile. When he focuses his attention back on Charlotte, my eyes wander over his appearance. He's wearing a leather jacket and black slim-fit jeans; I'm one hot mess. Charlotte and Nick are standing in the kitchen. When Nick leans onto the kitchen table, I can't help but admire his tight buns.
"Oh, wow, did you make this one for me?"
"Yes, it's a Cookie Monster cupcake," Charlotte says with pride. "Try it."
Nick takes a bite and chews as Charlotte awaits his reaction.
"And?"
"This is the best cupcake I have ever eaten."
An infectious, sweet smile spreads across her face with his praise.
"But now we've got a problem."
Charlotte shrugs. "What? Why?"
"Now I'm hungry for more. Even you look delicious."
Charlotte runs through the kitchen while Nick runs after her. He pretends to be ‘Nick the Cookie Monster.’” I laugh so hard at him pretending to be a monster that my sides hurt. I jump when Bella pops up next to me.
"Enjoying the show? I can't blame you. This sight could awaken any woman's ovaries."
I know Bella is staring, but I can't stop watching Nick and Charlotte's interaction.
"You're falling hard for him, aren't you?"
A flush creeps its way up my face.
"Girl, it's okay. That man is perfect. So let it happen. Don't hold back. You deserve a chance to be happy."
I lower my head for a moment while I whisper. "I'm afraid to get hurt again, Bella.”
"If you let your fear take over, you will end up old and alone, with only cakes and a few cats to keep you company. Oh and don't forget the pink goddess."
I giggle at her last remark. "Thanks for the reminder."
"Anytime, hon." Bella focuses her attention on Charlotte. "This way, Char. I will help you get away from that Cookie Monster."
Charlotte runs towards Bella and smashes into her with eyes flickering like sapphires. "Where is your backpack?"
"In my room, I'll get it." She runs off as Nick makes his way towards us.
