Chapter 14

I let out a yawn and stretch my arms and legs a few times. "I can do this," I mumble to myself. It's 9:30 am, and I've been up since five this morning, baking and filling my kitchen with a variety of sweets for Clair's diner. It was quite a time-scheduled process since I also had to bake a birthday cake, amongst other things. So after dropping Charlotte off at school this morning, I returned and continued to finish this quest.

When my oven alarm sounds, I walk over, equipped with my oven gloves, and as I open the door, the sweet essence of blueberry scones floods the kitchen. Giggling as I try to make space for it on the counter, I have a sense of fulfillment I haven’t had in a while. Maybe I’ve overdone it, but then again, why not? I want to show Clair what I can do.

I walk back to my workplace and grab a bowl of freshly whipped cream when a knock on the door startles me. I turn to make out who's there.

"Hey, Emma, I'm back."

I jump up when I see Miranda standing in my kitchen, and with a little sprint, I hug her. "God, I missed you."

She laughs, her eyes spreading when they fall onto craziness going on in my kitchen."What the hell are you doing?" She chuckles.

I softly laugh.I met Miranda when I moved here. She came by to introduce herself, and when I told her my plan of starting my baking company, she offered to help. While she had been working her entire life, when her husband sold their car company, she stopped but wanted something to do with her free time. And here we are.

I asked her if she wanted to assist with the deliveries, and she said yes. I'm so thankful for that because running a business from home and raising a kid by myself is beautiful but hard Besides, with her help I have more time to bake and take more orders.

I walk back and grab the card of Clair's diner from the counter and hand it to Miranda, who takes it and reads it while I explain.

"The owner of this diner is searching for a new baker to supply her with sweets. She asked me to select my specialties and deliver some to her so she can try them."

"That’s amazing, Emma. Does that mean that if she likes it and makes a deal with you, you'll have a stable income?" Her face is beaming with enthusiasm.

"Yes," I answer, returning her excited smile. "That's why my kitchen is like this," I say, pointing to the plates scattered everywhere.

"And you're planning on delivering today?" she asks.

"Yes. That's why I've been up since five this morning to get it done in time.”

Miranda puts her hands on my shoulders. "I'm back, and I'm more than happy to drive over there and do this so you can rest a little."

"Oh God, Miranda, you're the best," I say while kissing her on the cheek.

She smiles. "I know."

"I'll pour us a coffee. I want to hear about your vacation before we put everything in boxes. Deal?"

"Deal." She smiles.

A half an hour later, Miranda and I put the blueberry and strawberry scones, cinnamon sugar donuts, carrot cake, s'mores bars, apple, vanilla, and banana cupcakes, salted caramel brownies and coffee eclairs into different boxes.

"God, if Clair agrees on me baking for her diner regularly, I’ll need to find another space," I murmur. "I’d need at least one or two extra ovens for baking and an extra refrigerator for storage."

"Why don’t you look for a place you can use as a bakery?" Miranda asks.

"Because I can't afford to pay the rent at the moment."

"Oh, that sucks," Miranda mumbles. "You deserve it, and so do the people of Boston. Everyone should be able to taste your delicious sweets."

My head jolts up when the kitchen door opens and Nick walks in.

"Hello, beautiful," he says while giving me a panty-dropping smile.

Miranda immediately stops what she's doing, and her mouth drops open when she sees him.

"Nick?" I say, stunned by his surprise visit.

"Oh, I didn't know you had company. I was on my way to my parents' house and thought, let's drop by Emma's,” he explains while sending us one of his charming smirks.
