Brian rolls his eyes, and his smile falters.
Alisha's lips purse, and when her eyes flash to me, I give her mydon't do itglare, but she ignores it and opens her sweet mouth. "What do you think of Amanda going out with Steven?" Alisha says with a smirk.
"What? That dickless rooster asked her out?"
"I see Cole didn't update you. Well, let me be clear. Steven and Amanda clicked when he came to check up on me two days ago."
God, my lady can be wicked when she wants to make a statement.
A muscle in Brian's jaw twitches as he gawks at me. "Why would she go out withthatguy?"
Alisha cocks her head sideways and gives Brian a direct stare. "Why? Because Steven is a kind guy. And there is nootherman who asked her out."
I can't help but clear my throat and frown at hearing that dickhead’s name.
"See, Bulldozer hates the rooster, and I trust his judgment," Brian says, pointing to me.
Alisha glares at me through narrowed eyes. "There's nothing wrong with Steven," she says, before turning her attention back to Brian. "And as for you, Mr. Fox. Grow some goddamn balls. What you're doing to Amanda is cruel. Life is too short. If you want her, tell her! Otherwise, let her find a man who isn’t afraid of showing her how wonderful she is."
A deep, weighted sigh leaves his lips, and I watch how my best friend’s cocky demeanor diminishes and changes into a serious one. His entire body tenses and his brows draw closer as he shoves his clenched fists into his pants pocket.
"I..." he starts. Instead of continuing, he breaks eye contact and walks to the door. "If you'll excuse me," he says, snatching our two bags. "I'll be in the hallway." Halfway through the door, he halts and adds, "Oh, and I visited your mom as you asked. Jeremy is having a tough time dealing with what happened." And with that said, he disappears.
"That was too harsh, Alex."
She lets out a puff. "Yeah, well, let's just say I'm using the hashtag nofilter."
I shake my head and chuckle at this funny remark.
"Let's be honest, Cole. Everybody knows he has serious feelings for Amanda. Why the hell doesn't he tell her? He's going to lose her if he keeps continuing this push and pulling action of his."
"Brian is a fantastic friend, a hard worker, but he's a walking mess with love and commitment. I'll try to talk to him, see if I can figure out what's bothering him. But please stop harassing him. He could have his reasons to not act on his feelings."
Alisha tilts her head when I play with a strand of her blonde locks. "Fine, but tell me, why did you ask him to visit your mom's house?"
I touch my girl's cheek. "I asked him to drop by because I spoke with my mom on the phone twice this week when you were asleep. She told me how Jeremy identified David when the police came by and showed them the sketch."
Alisha's eyes expand. "You're speaking to your mom again."
I nod. "Jeremy broke drown when they explained to them David was the man that had assaulted you months ago and that they believed he was behind our disappearance. A few hours before David took us, I talked to Jeremy. He mentioned how he had to admit his wife to a psychiatric hospital and that his kids shunted him out of their lives when that happened. When he identified him at the mortuary, it was the first time he had seen his son in fifteen years."
Alisha's green eyes fill with tears. "I killed his child."
I cup her face in my palms and wipe away a tear. "It was him or us, Alex."
She rests her forehead against my heart and cries, and I hold her, drawing calming circles on her back with my hands until she raises her chin and speaks. "Can we stop by your mom's before going home?"
"If you're up for it, I'm with you. We can do it together. I need to talk with my mom, and I'm nervous," I confess.
Alisha's tongue darts out and skims over her lips. "There’s an excellent way to release nervousness."
"Oh, and what might that be?"
"Kissing! It’s the finest method to reduce stress."
I smirk and grab her chin as I lower my head. Her fingers claw into my shirt in expectancy, but when I place a soft kiss on the bridge of her nose and pull back, her eyes go wide.
"Not funny. Fucking kiss me!"
