Cole listens, and hangs up. "They're waiting for our arrival. They will inform the doctor; she's on duty."

When our eyes meet, he cups my face in his palms. "We're finally going to meet our children."

I chuckle, but it's replaced with a loud groan as a contraction comes whooshing in.

"Holy fuck a duck." I grind my teeth and take hold of Cole's arm to steady myself. I puff through the pain, but struggle with their intensity.

Cole pulls on my arm. "Okay, Alex, let's go."

"Are you kidding me? I'm having a goddamn contraction, Bulldozer. I can't move."

He gives me a sheepish smile while scratching his head. "Sorry, babe. Tell me when you're ready."

When it subsides, I nod, and while holding his arm, we make our way through the front door to our car. Out of the blue, anxious thoughts creep into my conscious mind.

"What if something goes wrong?"

As we stop next to the car, Cole faces me and cups my cheeks. "Alex, nothing is going wrong. You're going to deliver our babies, and we're going to love them."

His confident statement gives me strength, and I nod.

I hum and grunt the entire way to the hospital as the contractions come and go. "Fuck, it hurts."

Cole has a pained stare as his knuckles turn white as he clutches onto the steering wheel while maneuvering through the traffic, ignoring the speed limit. When we arrive at the hospital, he parks the car near the entrance.

"We're here, babe. I'm going to get a wheelchair." He hurries out, and I watch him disappear, but when he comes back, a nurse follows him, pushing a wheelchair. I grin, seeing his character frown and tight lips—his bulldozer character has come alive. When he opens my door, he mutters, "I can't fucking park here; I have to move it." He offers me his hand. "The nurse will bring you inside."

"It's okay. Our children won't pop out when you park the car."

The nurse chuckles while my husband lets out an enormous sigh.

"I just don't want to leave your side."

When I'm in the chair, he plants a kiss on my lips. "Be right back."

"I'm taking your wife to the third floor. I'll let them know you're on your way," the nurse explains.

Cole nods, and with a hurried stride, he finds his way behind the wheel and drives off in search of a parking spot. I glance at the woman behind me. "I'm Alisha Walker. And that is my stressed husband, Cole."

"Nice to meet you, Alisha. I'm Eve. Let's get you inside. And don't worry, nine out of ten soon-to-be fathers react this way."

We chat as she rolls me inside, but when another pain wave hits, I'm gripping the arms of the wheelchair, cursing.

"Oh, fuck! FUCK! Please tell me this will not get worse?"

Eve places a hand on my arm and reminds me to breathe. "You're really doing well, Alisha."

When we arrive on the third floor, she speaks with a colleague, telling her Cole is on his way and to show him to the right room. She wheels me through the hallway, and when she pushes open a door on the left, I am relieved to see a bed.

"Do you want to lie down?"

I nod, and she helps me out of the chair. "Can we remove my leggings? They're wet."

"Sure, no problem."

When I'm on the bed, I huff, resting my head. "This is better." Moments later, the door opens and Doctor Johnson and my husband stroll in. Cole finds his way next to me and places a kiss on my forehead.

"Hello," the doc says, stopping next to us. "So, today is the day. Are you excited about meeting your twins?"
