Sol: LMAO Not gonna deny it.

Butch: Can we talk?

Sol: No. I’m at a conference—counseling stuff. The guy who’s speaking is sending me to sleep. Figured I’d have more fun with you.

Butch: well, I’ve got supper up at the house, so your fun ain’t happening. Later, dude.

He switched his phone off, stuffed it into his pocket, then grabbed the box and went over to his bed. There was no place in his drawers for it, and he wasn’t about to leave it in plain sight. He shoved it under his pillow, and hurried out of the bunkhouse.

Any later, and all the food would be eaten by the horde of locusts he lived with.

He walked briskly up the path, his mind still on the shiny toy.

Butch had never bought a sex toy in his life, but he supposed it was never too late to start. At least now he had a name for the fiendish device that had grabbed his attention: the label on its packaging saidProstate Massager.

He’s trying to kill me. Death by orgasm, that’s what it’ll say on my death certificate.

He could almost hear Sol’s voice in his head.

Yeah, but what a way to go.

The boss met him at the door.

“We’ve been waiting for you.”

Butch removed his hat and stepped into the cool interior. “Sorry, boss. Had to deal with… something.”

He smiled, and Butch was so goddamn relieved to see Robert Thorston happy again. “Got a surprise for you.”

Butch wasn’t sure he could take two surprises in one day.

He followed the boss into the dining room, and his heart did a little dance to see Diana sitting there, chatting with Toby and Zeeb. Her face lit up when she saw him, and she held her arms wide. “Come here, you.”

Butch went over to her, bent down, and found himself hugged so tightly it robbed him of breath. When she released him, he kissed her on the cheek and stroked her hair.

“How you feelin’?”

She bit her lip. “The doctor says no horseback riding until I’m fully healed.”

“And you’re gonna listen to him, right?”

Diana smiled. “Yeah. I’ve already had the same lecture from Robert and Newt.” She took hold of his hands and squeezed them. “Thank you. Robert says you were wonderful.”

“I didn’t do all that much,” he protested.

“Sounds as if you kept your head. Newt says thanks too.”

“Why didn’t he come with you?”

She chuckled. “We have guests, remember? He’s been running the place single-handed all week.” Diana tilted her head to one side. “And what haveyoubeen up to?” Her eyes sparkled. “You’ve got this glow about you. I like it. Happy is a good look on you.”

I guess Iamhappy. What shocked him was that it showed.

Diana gestured to the table. “Now sit and eat while there’s still food left.”

He joined the others, and helped himself to a good-sized portion of mac and cheese. The boss’s good mood was infectious, and the atmosphere in the room was jubilant.

Butch pulled his phone from his pocket to check for messages, and was grateful not to have his mouth full at the time.
