Outside, the moon was out, full and bright, set in a swathe of deepest, darkest blue and purple. They walked slowly past the paddock toward the bunkhouse.

“That last part was kinda intense,” Butch murmured.

“But you can see why Toby had to say all that, right?”

“Oh yeah, totally. But it made me look at that room in a different way, you know?”

Sol smiled. “I think that was the point.”

“Is there anything else you need to do for the website?

Sol shook his head. “I’ve taken all the photos I’m going to. The rest of the week is mine, and I intend to spend most of it on horseback while I’ve got the chance.”

“Pity I’m not gonna be around. I could’ve taken you on the trail to Mirror Lake. It’s beautiful up there. The way the thermostat keeps climbing, all I can think about is going for a swim.”

“I should’ve packed my swim shorts but I didn’t think I’d need them,” Sol confessed.

“Youwouldn’tneed ’em, not up there. Hardly anyone else around.”

Sol paused at the bunkhouse door. “Why, Butch Buchanan. Did you just invite me to go skinny-dippin’ with you?”

That brief catch in Butch’s breathing was delicious, and the little devil on Sol’s shoulder took interest.

Sol rested his hand on the door. “Is the water very cold?”

“It can be, especially where it’s deep.”

“Sounds wonderful. We could go Friday, if time allows.”

“You want to?”

“Sure, why not? One thing, though.” Sol closed the gap between them and lowered his voice. “If I get cold, are you going to warm me up?” Without waiting for a reply, Sol went inside, smiling to himself.

I shouldn’t flirt with him.

Not unless I want to do more than flirt.

And then it struck him.

But Idowant to do more.

His stiff dick was testament to that.

Chapter 23

Wednesday, August 24

A hand shook Butch roughly from sleep.

“Hey, sleepyhead. You plannin’ on getting up this morning?”

Butch opened one eye. “It isn’t light yet. That makes it early.” He glared at Zeeb, who snorted.

“Rise ‘n’ shine, Your Highness. Sol and Walt already grabbed the showers, but you can have the next one, seeing as you and Paul are off on your little road trip.”

Butch sat up, rubbing his eyes. One glance told him Paul was not in his bunk. “Is he in the stable?”

Zeeb shrugged. “I guess. He wasn’t here when I woke up. Maybe he’s gettin’ the horse trailer ready.”
