When the Porsche turned again, Kordo began feeling uneasy. Before, the car had been following Rebecca’s route, but the last few turns had been a deviation that felt far too strategic.

He’d been working as one of Janic’s enforcers for years. And before that, he had grown up as war had ravaged the Balkans. The combined experiences had taught him long ago to listen to his instincts.

And his instincts were telling him to get out of there.

Instead of following the Porsche, he turned down a block early and sped away in the other direction.

???

Teddy counted off the seconds until the sedan should have driven passed his hiding place. When it didn’t appear, he rose high enough to look over the back of the Porsche.

The street was deserted.

He waited another three minutes in case the sedan had been driving slowly, but the other car didn’t show up.

His tail must have realized Teddy had spotted him.

Teddy backed out of the driveway and searched the neighborhood for the sedan, but it was nowhere to be found.

Part of him wanted to keep hunting for it, but Teddy knew he had another critical task to complete tonight. When he had come to Santa Barbara for theStorm’s Eyeshoot, he had expected to be on set most days. He’d planned to spend any time off either relaxing at the hotel or taking drives up the coast. Which was why he had arrived with little more than his car and a suitcase full of clothes. And his makeup kit, of course. He never went anywhere without that.

What he hadn’t brought along was anything that would help him solve a kidnapping. That was a problem that needed to be fixed.

So Teddy put the search for Rebecca’s car on hold and headed to the freeway.

Once he was driving south on the 101 toward L.A., he called his hacker friend Kevin Cushman, known in certain online circles as Warplord924.

Kevin answered with a distracted “Yes?” In the background, Teddy could hear fighting sound effects from whatever video game Kevin was playing.

Kevin made a very nice living from the comfort of his childhood bedroom, dealing with computer-related issues his clients didn’t know how to fix. This also allowed him plenty of time to get lost in the worlds of monsters and aliens and zombies.

“Did I catch you at a bad time?”

“Oh. It’s you. Uh, hi. Give me a second.” Over the line came clashes of steel and agitated grunts. Teddy was pretty sure several of the latter were not part of the game’s soundtrack.

A loud explosion soon drowned out all other sound. As it died away, triumphant music began playing.

“Sorry. Had to beat down some annoying raiders. What’s up?”

“I have a project for you.”

“Does it involve doing anything illegal?”

“Kevin, I’m shocked. Do you think I would ask you to do something that could get you in trouble?”

“Every time.”

“Good. We understand each other. I’m looking for a woman—”

“I feel your pain. But I would rather not get involved in your dating life.”

“No offense, but if I needed help in that area, you would be the last person I’d talk to.”

“I can respect that.”

“The woman I’m looking for has been kidnapped. I need you to check footage along her last-known route. There’s a chance the abduction was recorded. At the very least, you should be able to verify if she was where she was supposed to be.”

“I can try. Send me the info.”
