“I do.” Teddy patted Matthew’s arm. “I need a quick word with Peter first. You don’t mind waiting here for me, do you?”

“Not at all.”

Teddy headed to the set. Peter was at his usual spot near the camera, chatting with his father.

Teddy traded greetings with both of them, then said to Peter, “I hear you’re running a little behind today.”

Peter feigned surprise. “I knew it. Youdohave a spy on the set.”

“I do. She’s called my assistant, and she’s supposed to keep me informed on everything that goes on here. That’s how movies get made.”

“Ah. So that’s how. All these years, I’ve been thinking it had something to do with cameras and microphones and actors and, well, directors.”

“Don’t say that too loudly, or the press might find out. I can see the headline now. ‘Academy Award–Winning Director Doesn’t Know Anything About the Business.’ ”

“Good point. Probably wouldn’t be great for my career.”

“Probably not. Do you mind if I borrow your father for a moment?”

“He’s all yours.”

Teddy and Stone moved to a quiet area, away from the cast and crew.

“Can you go to the Novaks’ estate?”

“Now?”

“Yes. Another video should be arriving at sevenminutes after six. I’d like you to be there when it does. More specifically, I need you to keep Carl from doing something stupid, like calling the FBI.”

“I can do that. But he’ll probably ask me how close you are to getting Rebecca back.”

“I don’t want to overpromise, but between you and me, very.”

“So, in other words, stop him from flying off the handle while simultaneously keeping him in the dark.”

“You should stop listening to those people who say you don’t have a way with words.”

Stone headed for the parking area, and Teddy went in search of Kyle Hansen. He found him near the craft services area, grabbing a cup of coffee.

“Mr. Hansen, I’m Billy Barnett, the film’s producer.” Though Teddy had met Hansen when they’d searched the Novaks’ house, it had been in the guise of George Samuels.

Hansen set his cup down and held out a hand. “Mr. Barnett, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” They shook. “Daniel Rivera told me you need my help with something?”

“I do.” Teddy motioned for Hansen to follow him, and then led the acting head of security behind a grip truck, out of sight of everyone. “How do you feel about breaking into a car?”

“I’m generally against it.”

“I thought as much. Hold on.” Teddy called MikeFreeman and put him on speaker. “Mike, it’s Billy Barnett. I’m here with one of your men.” He glanced at Hansen. “It’s Kyle, right?”

“Yes, sir.”

“His name’s Kyle Hansen. I need him to break into Matthew Wagner’s car, but I think he’ll feel better about it if you gave him the okay.”

“Kyle?”

“Yes, Mr. Freeman,” Hansen said.

“I not only give you my permission, but you should consider this an assignment straight from me. If there are any repercussions, I will take full responsibility for your actions.”
