He reached for the gun in his shoulder holster.

Teddy leapt over the boxes and dashed into the new hallway. Rebecca lay on the floor, with Neno glaring down at her.

As the kidnapper reached for his weapon, Teddy jerked his own up and pulled the trigger. His bullet smashed into Neno’s shoulder, spinning him into the wall at the end of the corridor and sending his gun tumbling out of his grasp.

Neno pressed his back against the wall and kept on his feet. When he spotted Teddy, a brief flash of confusion clouded his face before fury washed it away. He scanned the floor until his eyes found his weapon.

Teddy took two steps toward him. “Not a good idea. Unless you enjoy getting shot. In which case, go for it.”

Neno deflated, as if admitting defeat, then lunged for the gun.

Teddy hadn’t been fooled, and by the time Neno’s fingers wrapped around the pistol, Teddy was towering above him. He stomped on the weapon, smashing Neno’s fingers between metal and floor.

“I did warn you,” Teddy said.

Neno screamed. “Go ahead, then. Kill me.”

“Why the rush? There’ll be plenty of time for that later.”

Teddy smashed his silencer into the man’s temple, bouncing Neno’s head off the floor and knocking the kidnapper unconscious.

Teddy turned to Rebecca. She had pushed up against the wall and was looking warily at him.

“Who are you?”

“Me? I’m nobody. But you’re Rebecca Novak, and you have one very worried husband waiting for you at home.”

“Carl sent you?”

“That he did.” He held out a hand to her. “Let me help you up.”

Matthew looked down the street at the gap between buildings into which Billy had disappeared. That had been over ten minutes ago.

He didn’t like this. Something felt... wrong.

The place the Porsche was parked next to looked deserted, as did a few other buildings in the area. And though several cars were parked along the street, he hadn’t seen a soul since Billy left.

Billy had said he was taking care of something for a friend, but what did that mean? And why park here, when he could have parked closer to whatever he had to do?

It didn’t make any sense.

Matthew had already been on edge from Billy’s earlier comment.

This is all happening because of your actions.

He knew Billy meant it as a compliment, but it had hit a little too close to the truth for Matthew’s liking.

He looked down the street again and cursed under his breath. If he sat there a second longer, he was going to go crazy. He threw open the door and stepped onto the sidewalk, hoping that stretching his legs would calm him down.

It did not.

Maybe if he saw where Billy had gone, he’d feel better. Newly determined, he started walking toward the building gap the producer had entered.

He made it three steps when the sound of a car door opening ahead of him echoed down the street. A half block up, a man climbed out of a sedan and stopped on the sidewalk, facing Matthew.
